  1. I didn't know that about Switzerland. So essentially they have to defend themselves in the event of war...does that mean crime as well?
  2. What is 'physical plant people' and what country are you from? Typically, nurses or healthcare workers are not referred to that term in the US...
  3. Well I guess I'll start then. I am completely devestated by the Newtown Tragedy in CT 12-14-12. Its scarey to think that a psychologically unstable kid could shoot little elementary school kids so violently and fairly easily. So what do we do. What precautions can we take to prevent this type of gun violence. Well we start with tightening up gun laws. Now we need to address mental healthcare and school safety as in structural change. What do school nurses think? What suggestions do you have regarding mental health in the students and what would you like to see as far as safety from intruders in your buildings?? What about psych docs, nurses, sped kids all that...meds and restraints...all of it?
  4. @Sherm~ you are off a bit...let's back up a bit...I am all for making money and being successful. Knock yourself out. Its all good. The issue is States are making budget cuts in healthcare anticipating the ACA in 2014. The CEO's make millions. They get paid to manage huge assets and responsibilities. I would think that these CEO's would make cuts to the staff that are overpaid and not indisposable, double negative intended. Instead we have a CEO that openly states that patient safety will be jeopardized if cuts to healthcare budgets are made. For 1+million, I would think we could get a little more creative in money management...isn't that WHY they make so much $$$$$???? I mean don't taxpayers pay that salary?
  5. I've got a LOT to say about this issue!
  6. A response from management fer sur....lol
  7. We have a CEO who openly and publicly said public safety will be in jeopardy if there are states budget cuts to hospitals. His salary is >1million. Guaranteed his salary will not be cut but bedside staff will be getting lay off slips...
  8. How about making the patient comfortable? A Foley and more morphine maybe?
  9. I can't help but feel a sense of defeat in your comments. An 'it is what it is' attitude. And you are right...I guess what really bothers me about being a whistleblower is that I reported safety concerns to management and finally to the Department of Public Health which is my responsibility to do...and that was a fire-able issue? How can a State not want to deal with safety concerns? And for all the NNU nurses fighting for better staffing and safety conditions, why aren't they getting fired too. This is surreal and I'm appalled at nurse management at ignoring the issue and going along with it. Any manager I've ever known has pt safety as first priority and staff safety too. If I got fired for reporting unsafe practices then I'm proud of that. I accept my new career as RN Whistleblower. Linda Kulmann RNW....LOL ....The patient safety snitch...ridiculous!!!
  10. Honestly, I would love to see the job description of nurse manager. It would be interesting to see what they're are supposed to be doing as opposed to what they are actually doing. I highly doubt that nurses intentionally leave the bedside to make the staff miserable once they become managers. Money is part of the equation I'm sure. Desperation is also a part of it because where are they going to go once they hate what they've become. Some probably get a high off of the power trip too...
  11. http://journals.lww.com/ajnonline/pages/results.aspx?k=Jane%20H.%20Barnsteiner,%20PhD,%20RN,%20FAAN,%20ContentType%3a%22Podcasts%22&Scope=AllIssues&txtKeywords=Jane%20H.%20Barnsteiner,%20PhD,%20RN,%20FAAN, Podcast on bullying...click on Barnsteiner (first article) This is an interesting interview, but the discussion is based on the healthcare facility actually caring enough to try to stop bullying. IMO, nurse managers or bullies could care less about fixing the issue. Its the only way they know how to manage.
  12. Keyword~~'appropriate'
  13. Take a pic and send that to the Dept of Labor ANONYMOUSLY...that is sooooo illegal...put the name of the nurse manager the floor the facility TYPED...or even better send it to newspapers and etc...
  14. The reason NOT to clock out and go back to work is for liability reasons. What happens is the employee gets hurt? Idk, but I'm thinking no workman's compensation and etc...it could get ugly. Management needs to know that the staff can't get all the work done and they need to hire...like that is about to happen. But if that employee gets hurt ON the clock at least you get write that it was short staffed when filling the incident report....
  15. "I haven't missed a single break, because I know they might be hard to come by once I'm off orientation." This makes me scream...they warn you about no breaks in nursing school! So much for our educational 'leaders' trying to change the culture! No matter how you sugar coat it, you are working through your break and I totally understand the rationalization in your mind because I've done it millions of times. Now though its just different. Now its deliberate. When I was a baby nurse we would pull each other up when someone was drowning. All one nurse would say is I getting killed out here and we'd all do 1 or 2 tasks, meds, dressings or whatever...DONE! But now, its evil. All I see is some nasty money counting bully saying 'I saved $500.00 this shift by not covering lunch breaks and look at those fools they don't even have clue....hmmmm I can't wait to get my bonus check this month COACH Bag here I come' or 'I think I'll have a day at the spa. My job is so stressful having to bully all day....pfffft...' that's what I see.
  16. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/11/when-the-nurse-is-a-bully/ Interesting easy read...but I'm looking for the meat and potatoes of bullying...the psychology behind beast
  17. They used to call it 'nurses eat their young' now its considered workplace violence, psychological violence...and it is a labor law violation tsk tsk. I have some examples do you? I'll start. A nurse in management accused me of a HIPPA violation because I did an admission in a semi private room and the roommate reported hearing some of the information...scared me to death and it was not a hippa violation at all. I was a target because I reported safety issue to the BON. A Whistleblower.
  18. Real life needs for the nurse supercede the real life needs of a healthcare facilities need to abuse and mistreat the staff. That's the reality of it. I find it disturbing when someone minimalizes a very basic labor issue. Laws are in place for breaks and there is new research that validates the adverse health issues related to workplace stress. Complacency kills. Its just not OK. I guess my next topic will be workplace stress and bullying. That is a new'ish interesting trend too :/ Very not nice...
  19. Ewwww....Its more sanitary to write directly on your scrubs
  20. What state and is it union....just curious....
