Maybe I wasn't very clear on my post, sorry;( I know the nrsg dx part of the care plan. However, under the H&P I have to write in the medical primary and secondary dx. Then make a concept map on the primary dx of that patient. I have several nursing dx from my assessment, but I am really stuck on which would be considered the primary dx. I am thinking its ERSD, and then the risk factors would be DM & HTN. But then I think that DM should be primary. I hope I explained it better. Thanks for all the input.

My care plan patient has multiple dx, and I am not sure which one would be considered a primary and then secondary. Admission MD dx:hypoxemia,potential sepsis, diffuse edema, left leg swelling, obtundation, anemia. Also included are: End stage kidney disease secondary to diabetes and hypertension. He is on dialysis 3x week, He has a rt partial foot amputation. He came to the hospital due to a left foot unhealing wound that went sepsis, they amputated his left lower leg at calf, and will be going back to surgery in a few days to half more cut off, so its a below the knee amputation. He has hx of MRSA, so on contact isolation. I know my care plan has to focus on the primary medical dx, but not positive what that may be. Would it be DM, and then secondary would be end stage kidney disease or CRF? I am really lost. My focus on nrsg dx is more about his inability to move & cope with this, but I don't think an amputation is a primary med dx. I have to make a concept map of the primary dx as well. SO I am stuck until I figure out the primary dx. Any advice would be soooooooo helpful. It figures I end up with the most difficult care plan pt(at least he is sweet).

The wait list the other post is referring to is referred to the "Alternates". If someone who made it in the program decides not to take the spot, then the spot it offered to an alternate. Some refer to it as a wait list.

I was hearing all these rumors as well. I know several people who have been nurses for 15+ years w/ degrees not from IvyTech, and they say that Ivy Tech's nursing program is outstanding, and hospitals are pleased with the nurses that come from there. I'm in central Indiana. Perhaps some areas prefer BSN over ASN, but overall, IvyTech is not a bad school. As for getting in, its on a point system, and it really just depends on what the points on for that semester of entrance. I have been accepted into the ASN fall program at Anderson with a 162 or 167(I'd have to go back & look). I also applied at Lawrence, but only got accepted into PN. I have a 4.0 gpa. Most colleges will tell you that you pretty much have to get A's in all your pre-reqs to get into the program. For the most part, it is true, but I have heard many have gotten in with a B or two. I personally chose IvyTech because of the location and the cost. I briefly went to IUPUI 15 yrs ago,(there was a wait list to get into the nursing program &very competitive back then as well), I reapplied to the college, met with the advisor, and she told me I'd have to get straight A's which is impossible, and should look into something other than nursing. Nice huh!! After the 40 min drive & seeing the cost, I transferred to IvyTech. I have managed to get all A's, it took a lot of work, and I really want to go back to IUPUI and shove my transcript in that advisor's face:) It is competitive everywhere for nursing. The lowerest gpa they except is usually 3.8. I heard Univ Of Indpls(I think that one) lowered there gpa to 3.1 to get more students into their nusring program. Not sure if I helped with your question or not, but just know it is competitive, but it's not impossible:) Best of luck

It can be frustrating. You have done so great, and would have totally gotten in at the CC around here. Don't give up. I am 36 and have always wanted to be a nurse, and had to give up college 15+ years ago. I finally am in a place to go back, and my old college(IUPUI) basically told me I'd have to get straight As to get in, and that that wouldn't be likely, and to find something else to do. I ignored the counselor, and do to finances I transferred to Ivy Tech. Well, I managed to get all A's w/ a 4.0 gpa. I was a nervous wreck about getting in, and when I got the letter as alternate I was alittle bummed, but remained hopeful. I got into the PN program, so I thought its better than nothing..but I really wanted the ASN. Last week I got the call that a spot opened up, and as alternate I can have it. I immediately said YES!! So keep your head, you may get that call. It is a stressful wait, and your stomach will sink everytime that phone rings. If you don't get the call, just keep appyling. With your grades, you will get in. Best of luck,

lilboop, I called my highschool and they no longer have my vacc records ( I graduated in 93). SO frustrated. THe little booklet my mom had for me when I was a child is not all the way filled out, so some vaccs are missing on there. Looks like I will be getting a Titer. Sigh!

I felt alittle overwhelmed. The cost is okay with me, because I know it is more than three times as much at other colleges. Still hurts to have to pay that much, but we've been preparing to spend it. I am getting overwhelmed with the vaccination records. I have had all my records sent to my pcp(from birth to now, I'm 36), and I called, and they told me that dont show any records of my vaccinations. WTH!!! So I'm on a records hunt now. Just take a deep breath..of course I need to take several:) Best of luck.

Good news... I got the call from Anderson today, a spot opened up and I have been accpeted into the ASN program. I'm so excited. I was happy to be in the PN program, but really wanted to go straight into the ASN. Doin' the happy dance!!:)

I'm feeling overwhelemd with starting in the fall. I think because I am taking Microbiology right now, and it ends July 31, and we go away for a week vacation, then the kids start school, and then I do. So not much of relaxation or down time. Plus I have the orientations to go to, and get all the PX and vaccs done, and get my CPR recertified. Fun summer:) It's worth it!

You should do fine. I took Chemistry in HS, and even a college Chem... that was 15 yrs ago, and I had to retake the Chemistry now due to it expired. I didn't remember anything from back then, and I managed to get an A in the class. Some of the stuff was alittle difficult, but I got through it. Best of luck!

Maybe some people lose their passion, but only you can speak for yourself. (Just a sidenote example, my sil is a dancer, and began teaching dancing becuase she has always been passionate for it... well it became a "job", even though she wasn't passionate for that job, she was and still is passionate about dancing, even though she no longer does it.) I know my opinion can't be as valid since I am only in nursing school, but I know I will always be passionate for nursing. I have wanted to be a nurse since I was 4 yrs old, never anything else. I have been around the medical field growing up, and have worked in many areas of the medical field, even the holding room at the hospital(where I had an inmate throw urine all over me). I enjoy it, even the extreme bad days. People who meet me & know me will tell you that they can't see me as anything else other than a nurse. It's just my nature, and is all I want to do, even with the bad days that come with it. Only you can keep your passion alive and be true to yourself, don't let others rain on your thoughts just because they might have lost their passion(which maybe there are other circumstances that made them feel that way). Hope that all made sense:)

I've only been through 1 week of it so far, and can say it's going to be a rough summer. I have spent at least 3-6 hrs a day trying to understand and remember everything. I'm curious to see how poorly I will do on the exams. Our class was told that the exams are strictly comprehensive/ short essay form. UGH, my weakness. I may understand a concept, but not sure I would be able to do essay form, but we shall see. From past experiences for studying, I find writing stuff out over & and over to be helpful, as well as reading it outloud. If you have someone to study with that is beneficial, but I haven't really had that luck. I'm just hoping I can come out of this class with at least a C(even though it would cause me to lose my 4.0). It is a really neat class, just too much to take in in such a short time. Goodluck

Yikes 4 weeks?? I just started the 8wk class, and am feeling the pressure. Idon't think it would be as bad if it weren't comprehensive. I'm not sure how well I can do with that. I guess all I can hope for is to get a C or better, so I wont have to retake it. I wish you luck.

Please don't quit nursing school. You have made it this far,don't let it pass by. I understand the importance of healthy weight, but I also know our society pays WAY TOO MUCH attention on appearances. Get your degree, and if you are wanting to lose weight, then do that as you go, or after. Don't let the rudeness of others ruin your goals! (I'm a very thin,tiny gal, and I don't and will never judge or discriminate against someone regarding weight. It just doesn't matter to me, if you are nice to me then that is all that matters. I know this isn't the same, but I understand how weight can be an issue. I can't stand when people tell me"you are so skinny it makes me sick", I find myself apologizing to them. It really hurts my feelings, I'd rather them focus on my personality than my looks. Like I said I know it's not really the same, but just don't let people get you down. Keep your chin up & goto school:)

Hugs kayruhh{{{hugs}}} I'm so sorry. I know this must be very frustrating and discouraging. In my area, they say the gpa for nursing is 3.7+, but I know a few colleges that have lowered the gpa to 3.1 to get in. I know that doesn't help you feel any better. I had to drop out of college 15 yrs ago, and am now 36 going back. I hated having to walk away from college & my nursing dream, but I was able to stay within the field, and loved every minute of it. Although I will admit I had moments of jealousy and was so envious of nurses. I was fortunate to find jobs where the physicians found me valuable and treated me as if I were a nurse/ med assistant(meaning they trained me and allowed me to do things that a nurse or MA would do). ALthough CNA can be a tough job, I really loved it, and being there for the elderly in the nursing home. Here's an idea of what you can do if you don't get accepted right now. It's probably what I would do if I were in your shoes. I'd get with a counselor and chose some degree to go with so you can use your scholarship(congrats on that). Its always a plus to have a degree, no matter what it is. Then look into CNA, or even getting a job, any job at a hospital. When I worked at a hospital, I saw many enviromental services(janitorial) & unit secretaries be able to get trained and into a nurse tech or nursing assistant toye position, and then the hospital also can help you pay towards school, so maybe you can retake some classes to get your gpa up. The worst thing you can do is to give up & ealk away form your education. PLEASE DONT DO THAT!! I hated and have regretted letting 15+ years go by, even if finances was the main problem of me not beign able to return or continue. Still finances are tough now, but I refuse to let go of my dream. Nursing is my passion, it is all I know(whether I will become one or not, the medical field is me). So keep your head up, and just find some temporary alternative paths to follow until you get your nursing degree. Just don't give up, you have worked too hard already to give up. (Oh side note, practically all my prereqs that I took 15 yrs ago, I had to retake now, so that was frustrating, and I was ready to say forget it, I'll never be a nurse.. but I retook those courses, and it has paid off. I didn't get into the ASN, but I got PN and an alternate for ASN. It's a start, and I'm not quitting this time,+ I'm getting alittle old to put it off much longer:) {{HUGS}} Chin up & Hakuna Matata

The TEAS was just pure evil!!! I studied alot for it, but I took it two days after having to take 3 mid term exams, so I had fried brain!! I was warned when I started that you pretty much have to have all A's in the prereqs to get in, and if not then to take it over. It's frustrating. Hang in there. Ok, so I just called Lawrence to see if I got into the RN... NOPE. She said if you got accepted into the PN then you are not accepted into the ASN. So I went ahead and accepted the PN place. Now I can just hope that I get a call from Anderson for the ASN.

xaviersmommie00 My scores weren't the greatest. It was 161 . I can't even remember. I got a 76 on the TEASV, and All A's in all my prereqs(well the ENG111 was from 15 yrs ago was a B, so that hurt me, even though I took ENG112 & got an A) It sucks because I have a 4.0, and was told not to worry about retaking ENG111, but to take ENG112, then to find I no longer needed 112 anymore. UGH!! I did awful on the TEAS, so I really felt I wouldn't get in at all. I hate that they only go by points instead of looking at the whole picture. Don't assume its bad news, your letter just probably hasn't come yet.

Okay, so I saw the maillady drive by, and ran to get the mail, I then saw an IVyTech envelope, and my stomach & heart dropped. I began shaking like crazy with nerves. THe verdict is that I made ALTERNATE for the ASN at Anderson. I guess that's better than a rejection. So I will accept the offer, but I will also accept the PN at Lawrence, just in case I never get that Anderson call. I'm assuming that since I got into the PN at Lawrence, that I probably didn't make it into the RN. I'm wondering if I should wait it out a few more days, or call to verify this. I should be excited and relieved, but I'm feeling dissapointment in myself and overwhelmed. It could be the perfectionist in me?? Now for the stupid question: In the letter it states " you must provide a current healthcare provider CPR card which is to include AED(American heart association or red cross). I do not have a current CPR card(it expired along long time ago, I did take a 2 hr course on CPR a couple of years agom, but was never given a card. I'm assuming I need to go get a card by taking a class. ANy suggestions to where??? YMCA is the only place that comes to mind. Thanks

Thanks for the update on Anderson. I'm thankful for the PN acceptance, but I am really hoping that I get into the RN at Anderson. I've notice my hair has been falling out lately, hmmm wonder if the waiting is causing it, HAHA!! :)
