Yeah - you need more info to tell the reason. Heparin is an anticoagulant. If they've had recent surgery, then it would be to prevent the patient from throwing a clot. If the patient is s/p MI, then also to thin the blook and keep it from forming clots. A simple dx of bipolar disorder isn't a reason for giving heparin.
  2. Thanks for the replies! When I said "too involved", I guess I was trying to say "not let the cases affect you too much." I have read some stories that just tug at my heartstrings and it makes me wonder if I can handle it emotionally without becoming a wreck myself. I am sure that everyone cries at one time or another when they lose that "special patient" but how do you keep at it day after day? I can see this as a very challenging yet rewarding field and I really hope to start my studies soon! cheers!
  3. I've been reading a lot of discussions on these forums, and I think it's great! You all are so kind and supportive of each other. I'm on another professional forum and there is so much negativity and bashing going on over there. Anyway, I digress... I'm going to be applying for a master's entry option in nursing next year. It's been a lifelong dream to become a nurse, though I was sidetracked by a former teacher just trying to be helpful... I have lots of empathy and compassion for others and know that I could be a good nurse, but I worry that this could be a bit of a fault/weakness in addition to it being an asset. How do you take yourself out of a situation and not get too emotionally involved? I don't know if emotionally involved is the right phrase, but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say here. I'd appreciate any advice or input. :)

LOL... I just had to laugh after reading this thread. I have a 3 year old. Earlier this year he had brilliant grass-green poop. My immediate reaction was to freak out, but since he was in no obvious distress, I did quick research. Yup, there are certain blue food dyes that will turn the poop mysterious shades of green. I thought back to the day before, and we'd gone to a friend's daughter's christening and he'd eaten cake with blue flowers on the icing. What I don't get are the really pale colored stools... still haven't figured that out yet.
  5. LOL - I was thinking of House too! I understand being in pain and not being able to be as pleasant as you'd like, but it's easy not to be downright rude. How does one work with a migraine? I get them more often than I'd like, and they knock me down. I can barely see straight let alone work with one! They feel like a sledgehammer pounding in my head, and I get nauseous/throw up, and can't stand light/sound/smell. Migraine sufferers definitely have my sympathies. How to handle the doc... I can't tolerate rudeness. I would only get someone coffee/tea/water if they ask. This doctor, I'd probably direct him to the coffee pot and walk away.
  6. Wow... It's refreshing to see that there are a lot of us out there with BS degrees in other things, now looking toward nursing. Even the law students. So, in 1999, I was accepted to Pharmacy school and withdrew from the program due to personal, family, and financial issues. I am afraid that this is really going to hurt my chances of getting into a Master's Entry program. My cum. undergrad GPA is around a 3.25, though my GPA for the nursing program pre-reqs is around a 3.8. I have to wait for my son to start school before I can start applying (which will be next fall). Does anyone have any ideas on how to speak to the pharmacy withdrawal? Cheers!
  7. OMG.. Well, I'm new to the board, but I figured now would be as good a time to post as any! My A&P II final is cumulative, but covers about 4 modules from A&P I!!! I saw the objectives and started freaking out. I emailed the professor, and he was like "yup, scary huh?" so not happy! I'll be so glad when I'm finished with this course! I'm taking A&P II and Intro to Pharmacology this semester. Next semester, I'll take Nutrition and Intro to Sociology. I work full time, so 2 classes is the most I like to take and still keep my sanity!
