yeah i had been pulling clots out for a couple days, and i thought one was in there again, so i reached up and pulled but it wouldnt come, so i pinched, and I pinched off a foot.

I can say from laboring without meds, it hurts, but it isnt impossible even in a hospital.

NatKAt, in their defense, they were very cordial once i saw the doc. they took the baby and put it in a 2*2 tray and covered it with gauze.. they asked if i wanted to see it and left me alone to say good bye for about 5 minutes. They then took the baby to pathology by hand for a necropsy.

I couldnt agree more, and I would have called my OB from the hospital room phone.

I can tell you that the ED nurse sat with me for about 4 hours, pulling out clots, cleaning me up and crying with me.

I will NOT have an epidural next time if i am able to. I have fibromyalgia now and I am in pain every second of my life, so its nothing new to me.

I have two kids and have had 13 miscarriages, but even before my kids thats where I wanted to work. AND, I really only want to work at one hospital, but I will keep my options opened. I still have a long way to go in school.

yeah i know what you mean. Onco would be more fun in an intellectual sense. You get to be on the cutting edge in terms of new proceedures and drugs. I would hate it because of the morbitity of the patients in a unit like that.

I know that many people have felt very rewarded working in a gero unit. That is something that is hard to find often in nursing. Many people are less than happy about their nurses or doctors. Gero patients and families tend to be happier.

It's ok. I have lost a lot. Ive had 13 miscarriages. I do have 2 healthy sons though and I feel blessed to have them.

During a nursing 2000 rotation I shadowed a L&D nurse. She had a 15yo patient in labor who called her in and screamed... "MY STUFF HURTS" the nurse wrote that on the chart verbatum then called the doc and said "I think you need to get down here, her stuff hurts." I went into the ER once having a miscarriage. I tolf the Triage nurse why I was there... he asked why I thought that. I showed him a foot (i had pulled it off thinking it was a blood clot inside me...loooooooooong story) he said ok.. go have a seat and Ill get you a bed. 6 hours later I got that bed and the doc came in asking what was wrong. I told him i was having a miscarriage... he said why do you think that.. I said because the baby is now in my pants. I was pissed. Later, I snagged my chart and read it.. the doc wrote " patient presented with a baby in her pants... suspected miscarriage" You think?

I had a similar experience with my own epidural, I thankfully lived, but one of my children did not. I got an infection in the hospital... I had been in there for 3 weeks on bed rest with twins. My children were born at 140 pm and by 9pm my smallest son had died and my bigger one was on deaths door. They had strep. I had been tested the day before delivery for strep B and I didnt have it. After delivery I developed a fever and headache. I was put on antibiotics as well as my sons, but only two of us made it out of there alive. The hospital admitted guilt and the doctor was fired but it didnt help my son.

I would take the gero position. I lived in chicago a long time and I know (as well as you) that the cost of living is insane as well as the commute time and cost. You can transfer units in the future if you hate it but i suspect that the staff and patients are happier there then in an onco unit. ALso, the charting is very important and helps decrease mistakes. As a nursing student now, I know i will not work somewhere where its all hand charted... too much is lost that way.

I want to work in L&D. Its all Ive ever wanted to do. I think my personal history will help me be a better nurse in that department, and I also think my desire is great. However, Im scared that the competition for a job in that department will keep me from doing it. Anyone have any imput on this?

I am currently in school, but my mom works at Methodist, and I will work there too when I am done with school. She makes just under 30 an hour as an RN. She has a masters though. I am a bit discouraged by what ive heard on this subject, i must say.

This is insane behavior for anyone who is caring for patients. If I were you I would report it to the board of the nursing home as well as the police. I dont know if your contract says what should be done in a situation like this but you might check your employee handbook or contract, however, if youre not worried about keeping this job i wouldnt bother... Just call the cops.
