West Coast University
I feel obligated to respond to this old comment because it is absolutely infuriating to me. Quite frankly, it's outrageous. The program at WCU is one of the most rigorous BSN programs. It's no joke. The nurses in my family that went to WCU are excellent nurses. There is no indication that someone who is willing to take out a student loan for an accelerated BSN program is incapable of critical thinking or has bad decision making. I could argue that people who pay money to become a CNA and then LVN and waste years working harder than any RN for 1/3 of the annual salary just to get the approval of some conceited person sitting in a hiring committee lack critical thinking skills and display bad decision making. I am a 41 years old. I came here to this country 8 years ago and started attending community college. For the most part of those 8 years I worked and only took 1-2 classes because that's as much I could handle. I do not have the time to become a CNA, work, then get my LVN then work top then wait years get accepted into an ADN program due to the insane number of applicants in SoCal. Even with a 4.0 GPA, which I have, you won't stand a damn chance. Just to give you some perspective, in Summer of 2024 over 600 excellent students applied to the RN program in Riverside, CA and only 80 got accepted. Now, when you are 41 like me and you need to make money yesterday, you will consider private schools. It is the faster and more effective route. That doesn't mean I lack critical thinking skills or can't make good decisions. If the US wasn't so god damn expensive I wouldn't have to consider a new career to get ahead of the game. Nursing is paid well and I've always loved the sciences and medicine. And I have lots of nurses in my families, I know that I would be an excellent nurse. So how dare you insinuate that people like me are lazy wanting to take the easy way out. I hope you've changed your mind in the 11 years since you made that comment. But I doubt it.

Anybody have rituals they do when a patient passes?
What does the stranger behind you have to do with some random person that passed? I don't want to be insensitive but this is sily. An act of kindness would be to donate in case the family is poor so they can afford to lay their beloved one to rest.

Why is nursing school "hard?"
Ah ha. So accountants make 70 - 90k a year? Working full time while going to Nursing school? This is not possible. You cannot work full time and attend classes. It is NOT possible. At my college, it's at least 30-40 units a week which means you are a full-time student. You CANNOT work a full-time job. Any type of school or program is hard if you're constantly sleep deprived...You could have taken out a loan and focused on Nursing. Don't keep telling people it's hard just because you failed to manage your life during that time. Nursing school is not hard for people who want to study. The material they teach you is not inherently intricate. You're not a math major for god's sake. Stop scaring people. We need capable Nurses.

Why is nursing school "hard?"
It's all a matter of how you organize yourself and how you study. I talked to two Nurses (BSN's) and they laughed at me when I said people say Nursing school is hard. My wife also laughed (whom is a PhD in Biochemistry) and said go get a PhD or M.D. and then lets talk about what's hard. If you want this job and you love medical stuff it should be a piece of cake for you to retain medical terms and all that. You're not going to be a Doctor. Most of what they want you to read you don't even need. I've read an article about how hard Nursing school is and the author gave an example of why it is hard. She said that you have to research a lot instead of the teacher giving you the information you need to memorize. I can understand why this is hard fo rmany people because critical thinking seems to be a problem in the United States of Dumbmerica.

Can nurses use medical marijuana?
Your concern is irrational. How many Nurses are sleep deprived? Do they get tested and fired? Who do you think would be more awake and alert a person who smokes weed occasionally on their off-days or a person who is sleep deprived 24/7? Are you telling me that the sleep-deprived person is going to be more alert than the person who chooses to smoke pot recreationally on their off-days? Ridiculous. I can't even express my anger without going off the rails. The way you and other people think, or society for that matter, is just disappointing. People drink alcohol all the time which is of NO use. It doesn't treat any illnesses nor does it relieve pain but people are allowed to drink as much as they want on their off-days and they get to keep their jobs but people who like to blaze up on their off-days to relieve stress are treated like morons who can't perform at work.

Can nurses use medical marijuana?
How many take ADD medication or other prescription drugs? Are you saying they shouldn't be nurses? My wife has ADD and anxiety and she takes her prescription drugs as prescribed and she's a successful Ph.D. in Biochemistry. She's alert and awake whereas other people who didn't get enough sleep but are otherwise healthy aren't. This whole drug testing stuff is discriminatory. In Germany, no one tests you for drugs because it is your BUSINESS. Of course, if you show up at work intoxicated then good riddance. Honestly, how many Doctors and Nurses are sleep deprived to the point where their work performance suffers? Do they get tested for 'sleep deprivation' and kicked out? Don't be ridiculous. Either you kick everyone out who drinks, takes prescription drugs, is sleep deprived or you stop discriminating against minorities who need to take certain drugs to function properly. This society really is a pain....
