  1. So much for compassion in nursing!!!. The work place is now multigenerational and this issue reflects that. The graduates coming out, you were born with computers. we, of the boomer generation, word processors were these huge machines that were at printer companies only ( and this was after high school!) Do you think we would trust our research papers to these machines? You have no idea of the work in typing papers by hand (counting the number of letters and spaces and dividing in half to correctly align the paper titles, margins, etc.). Yes, we older nurse are not as computer literate as we'd like to be, but you did not nurse in the old days when nursing behaviors were significantly different. Not an overnight task to change years of trained behavior. We all develop our own style of nursing and computer charting has significantly changed this behavior. We get just as frustrated with you young nurses who "know everything" and are going to save the world. Only time and experience can you develop the wisdom that comes with knowing what is not written in books. Many of you scare us older nurses because we know that if we try to tell you, you dismiss us because of our age and you (and unfortunately the patient) pay for your "being green". We can only pray that hopefully, you learn from your mistakes. What this multigenerational work force needs to learn is COMPASSION. Severely lacking in our work environment (young and old).
  2. To those who believe in vaccines, I too at one time shared your belief as that I what I was taught and I believed that I had received good medical training (I graduated in the top of all my classes andtop 1% of my university). However, as life is, I have had life experiences and have seen the adverse affects of vaccines. Now, what is unacceptable , is that just because I have had life experiences that contraindicate what the CDC says, does not mean I will abandon the wisdom from my life experiences. It is very interesting to note that it is more socially acceptable for me to claim religious practices as a reason to not take the vaccine than to claim an adverse reaction. We have become so intolerant of anyone that has opposing to views to what we were/are taught. The health care industry has totally lost its compassion . This vaccine issue has taught me a lot. I find the vaccine campaign and utilization of fear/guilt to entice health care workers to get the flu questionable. What's up with the fear campaign? Anytime ANYBODY utilizes fear to motivate, you should at least question why. Fear is utilizedoften to control. The flu vaccine does not prevent people from getting the flu. Do your own research and see for yourself. Go work in the ER and see...not only for the flu vaccine ,but others as well.. The CDC is not necessarily your bestest buddy ..simply look at how they handled the testing of HIV in blood products. The CDC is a government entity and it is subject to corruption and power plays just like the rest of the government. Australia banned the flu shot nationally for their kids. Think about that one and the process to ban something nationally... gotta have some significant data there.. Take off your polyanna glasses, do your own research and open your mind and think for yourself. How about good ole common sense in preventing the flu. Good handwashing, healthy diet, healthy thoughts and adequate rest. Maybe that is what the flu is teaching us. We're not getting enough rest. Then why take a shot so we can continue to work instead of honoring our body's own inherit wisdom and enhancing our well-being?. Regardless of whatever stance you take, develop the compassion for others to honor their life experiences despite the difference from yours..
  3. The thing that is consistent about our profession is that you will ALWAYS hear a lot of stuff - some true, some not. If it doesn't sound or feel right, it probably isn't. People, even professors, have their opinions. Unless your professor is obviously incompetant, let it go. If you get hung up on stuff like this, your gonna have a difficult time in the profession. The way stats change now days, that stat very well could have been true at one time. I've seen lots of kids with milk allergies. Stats are like the weather, give them a minute, they'll change. Furthermore, life/clinical experiences do not necessarily match what the books (or stats) say and it is a fool who ignores the wisdom of life experiences.
