Pressure to work on certain Unit

I wish to get some advice about my future in Calgary, if I do wanna go forward with it.

Firstly, I am from Australia and had to do the SEC assessment for IEN's. The results of that require me to do a 4 month course in both Pediatric and Maternity, no problem am willing to do that as I am inquisitive to gain skills and experience in these areas. However as I am working as a NA on this particular Unit, which is a good area to work on but I see alot of stressed out nurses and plus working on computers aint my cuppa tea where all the med orders, and other orders inputing data such as vitals is a new thing for me as I like the end of bed charts which have everything. It seems that since I got a position on this particular Unit, it feels that there is pressure for me to do the courses so that I can work on this Unit.

The Unit is a good place to work, but I see the stress and because its heavy type of unit, it dont make me feel good. Maybe I am worrying for nothing and I do hope to get good experience but I just feel I wouldnt cope and be upset alot. A particular co worker I work with, advised me I am not obligated to workin the Unit, you can go wherever. Everyone has been nice to me on the Unit but I feel like I would be backstabbing my manager to venture into some other area. As the courses too offer clinical practicals and who knows I may enjoy it and want to work there.

Also, I wanted to get advice too about this situation I am involved in. There is a part of me that doesnt wish to pursue the courses and feel like going back to Australia because of some situations that I have encountered has put me off. My husband advises me to do he courses whether you pass or fail, as the opportunity to study in

Canada is a good experience.

I guess I am scared because I dont do well in assessments.

I would do the courses, then assess the situation. If you like it stay, if you don't move. If they start to question you, I would just tell them that you are still young (regardless of how old you actually are), and you want to try out some others areas of nursing. Don't feel the pressure to work on a particular unit--thats the beauty of nursing, you can work ANYWHERE!

Yeh I agree with your reply and I thank you for that.

I was assisted to get work from an ex manager of this unit as a NA to help with income whilst getting my Permit to work. I seem to feel obligated to work on this unit because they took me on. I have thoughts racing in my mind, yeh work on the unit for 6 months or if it aint working out within that time period then leave. Or if I like either Pediatric or Maternity I could work there, so the world is my oyster and I really am trying to find my niche in this world of nursing.
