Possible Atlanta Relocation

Published

Hey All,

I'm currently living in Nashville, transplanted from Pennsylvania, but am considering relocating to Atlanta. I have neuro/trauma experience, Level I ER experience (5 years worth!), and currently work in a high acuity CVICU (surgical and medical cardiac pts).

My question is... which hospitals offer the best work experiences? I don't know if I want to stay in ICU, or go back to the ER. Emory has the trauma center, correct? I've heard that the ER at Grady is intense though, too. Which Emory campus is the "better" one to work at? There are so many places that seem fairly equivocal in the area that I'm a little lost where to attempt applying.

Any insight on what different places offer would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Glad to hear you're considering moving to ATL. I've been here for a little over a year (relocated from Connecticut).

A lot of it depends on what you're looking for. Do you want to live inside the city limits (or inside the perimeter, as us ATLiens call it). If you're really looking to live inside the heart of the city, Emory Midtown is smack dab in the thick of things. Piedmont is about 3 miles North of Emory Midtown, in an area known as Buckhead. I don't know if you're single, married, kids, etc, because that would obviously have an impact on where you'd want to move.

Emory's main campus (where the medical school is) is toward an area called Decatur, which is also pretty nice. Grady is downtown and is definitely more gritty-but known for being a great trauma hospital. I'd steer clear of Atlanta medical center. Northside is a liltte north of the city but is also pretty well reknown.

good luck and let me know if you have any other questions

Grady, no question about it. Grady is a Level I trauma facility, even though Atlanta Medical recently got designated Level I, Grady is still the main trauma center. Grady is a teaching hospital, as is Emory, but the experience you get at Grady (if that's what you're looking for, experience vs $$$) is unrivaled, at least in the areas you're interested in.

I agree with ^. It definitely depends on what you're looking for and are interested in.
