You can work in any specialty area as an RN. I started in mother/baby as a new LPN graduate, and just continued there as an RN. I actually wanted to work as a Med/Surg nurse to start with, to get more experience, and exposure, but there were no openings on the Med/Surg floor, just on Mother/Baby. I really love it, but I am very limited in my experience. I would actually recommend starting in Med/Surg just to get experience, and then picking a specialty. It is easier to go that way than the opposite. I am trying to switch to ICU, and it is a little scary. I am so comfortable where I am, but I know I need a change. That's the wonderful thing about being a nurse, you can work anywhere, if you get bored, or burned out in one area, then you can try something else. The important thing is that you are helping others. It is so rewarding. Good luck. You picked a great profession.

Is it the same thing or different? I am going to be starting a 2 yr. nursing program (hopefully) next year. How do I get into a specialty with an R.N. (A.D.)? Will I have to be a general R.N. for awhile or will I need to get my schooling?

Thank you Brenda for your response and the great advice. Now I know where to start after finishing school.
