NICU Calling?

I'm just curious did any of you NICU nurses out there feel like it was your "calling"? I feel very strongly about a career in the NICU, although I couldn't really explain why, other than some limited personal NICU exposure. People often tell me that I must be "crazy" to want to work with such critical babies. It hasn't changed my desire, even though I'm only a pre-nursing student. I can't get the idea of helping premature babies and their families out of my head... it's what is driving me at this point.:)

I believe that it takes a certain kind of nurse to work in the NICU. If you believe its for you, then go for it. I knew in high school that i wanted to work in the NICU, thanks to my mom. I followed her footsteps

Yes, there is a "calling" for some nurses. I have worked in a NICU for only seven months and I still have so much to learn, but I absolutely LOVE it. It feels like this is what I was born to do. Right after I graduated, I worked for a year on a med-surg unit because that is what you are "supposed" to do when you first start your nursing career. Well, I hated it! Don't listen to the criticism of others. If you really feel drawn to the NICU, go for it! It is such a joy to look forward to going to work, and then to come home feeling like you did something worthwhile. Good luck!

i absolutely agree. i went into nursing school knowing exactly what i wanted to do. i made it through because i knew i wouldn't have to take care of adults ever again!! i couldn't imagine doing anything else. i have been doing this for 5 years, and can see working here for many more.
