New grad unit?

Hi all! I will be graduating next May with my bsn. I currently work as a CNA part time in the float pool. I am primarily placed in the Med Surg unit’s in the adult hospital and wow I hate it. I find patients to be more abusive towards staff and not just have a medical problem, but often severe psychiatric problems. I know they say it is best to start Med Surg, but I cry constantly at my job now because I am so miserable. What units do you nurses recommend for new grads who want to avoid Med Surg at all costs? I would like to get into a pediatric / maternity unit but would like to hear any other suggestions/ advice from those who know best! I considered cardiology / neurology / adult icu but they’re not much of a fit! If you could also recommend any pediatric (or adult) specialties that you find have a better “clientele” or are beneficial to new graduates I greatly appreciate that!

Side note: I understand no unit is perfect and there’s rough patients everywhere but I just don’t want to lose my love for nursing and be miserable every day of my life due to a job. ❤️

To all you Med Surg nurses out there! I am in awe of how well you handle these patients and maintain a smile on your face. You deserve a gold medal and more!
