need help deciding

Ive wanted to be a nurse since I was 5 years old.I have never changed my mind. Ive had to put off going to school 3 times, hence, my 3 children. Anybody that goes to school in the Sacramento area knows how screwed up the programs are up here. I have two options. One, start my 5 semesters of prereqs before I apply to RN school. It will take me 5 years to get the RN.Or,I can take one year of prereqs and go for my LVN and get out in a total of 2.5 years.I have a big problem with math.I have the biggest math anxiety head trip there is. I think Im avoiding my dream because of it. I want to hear your raw, truthful opinions on LVN vs RN and what I would be losing or gaining.Anybody out there that went through 5 semesters of prereqs and finally got their RN?

Thanks,

AMber

I hated math too...big time!!! LVN VS RN......Now I am a RN, but that was my decision...it took me 6yrs (I also have children.)....I liked only having my nursing course to worry about and no pre-reqs (to me "extra" courses)...in the end it will be a decison you'll have to come to......go through the trudge now of getting your RN or go ahead and get your LVN knowing you want the RN and then really have the trouble of going back to school...look into what LVN's in your area can and/or can not do...pay rates, etc...make your decision on that and what your heart tells you to do to fulfill your dream!!

Good luck :)

Hi Amber!

Let's get that math anxiety level down..... yep there is a way!

I too was very anxious about my math skills and what would be required of me. I was terrible at math in high school and never felt comfortable doing it.

I took a med math class for the LVN program that I initially was going for. It was great! I learned math with great ease when I was soooo sure I would fail when I began the class.

My friend took a remedial math class at community college too.

The instructors at these math levels are so good. The whole class was math anxious! And they break it down so that it makes sense.

With that under my belt, I decided to go for the RN right away...... and took algebra at community college as a pre-req for the nursing class. I passed with a B!

I am now 1/2 way thru my pre-reqs and will be eligble for nursing school next Spring. Yippeeeee!

Going to that first math class was the best thing I could have done for myself. It opened the whole world to me, as my fear of math disappeared by the end of first week!

Hugs!
