NCLEX question

Published

1. An older adult client with bilateral osteoarthritis of the knees tells the nurse that she knows she needs to lose weight but exercise will just make her knees ache more. What instruction should the nurse provide to this client?

A) Eat a reduced-calorie diet for several months before attempting exercise.

B) Discuss knee replacement surgery with the physician.

C) Stretch the muscles, because that is the only form of exercise that improves osteoarthritis.

D) Exercise the muscles so that they will protect the joints.

I am between B and D, but leaning more towards D. Any thoughts?

Now that you know D is the answer can you tell us why

1. An older adult client with bilateral osteoarthritis of the knees tells the nurse that she knows she needs to lose weight but exercise will just make her knees ache more. What instruction should the nurse provide to this client?

A) Eat a reduced-calorie diet for several months before attempting exercise.

* Eating a reduced-calorie diet can help with the weight loss, but not attempting to exercise for several months will not benefit the client with osteoarthritis. (Physical Activity for Arthritis)

B) Discuss knee replacement surgery with the physician.

* Knee replacement surgery may be needed in the future, but for right now nonpharmacological interventions should be tried first to see if they could help manage the pain. (Arthritis Management)

C) Stretch the muscles, because that is the only form of exercise that improves osteoarthritis.

* Stretching is not the only form of exercise that improves osteoarthritis; aerobic, muscle, strengthening activities and balance activities also help improve osteoarthritis. (Physical Activity for Arthritis)

D) Exercise the muscles so that they will protect the joints.

* Muscle strengthening exercises are important for the client with osteoarthritis because having strong muscles takes some pressure off of the joints. (Physical Activity for Arthritis)

I am new to the forum and don't expect anyone to "do my homework". I have to find my own rationales from credible sources so I am not expecting people to give me rationales. We all think differently and other people's opinions guide me. I also like to double check and see if other people have the same thinking because I might be reading the question differently. I understand your concerns.

I'm sorry but seeing that you joined yesterday and seeing the multiple threads you've started, I really think you're using this forum incorrectly. I agree with the poster who commented before me that if you're going to pose a question please be thorough in including your own thought process. Still regardless, it seems to me like you want to have your homework done for you. If you've already found your rationales from credible sources does that not already provide most of your answer? Best of luck to you in nursing school.

I respect your opinions and will stop using the forum. I don't want to upset anyone, which it seems like I have. This is my first time using a nursing forum and I guess I thought this could be a place for advice and some guidance not only for myself but for other nursing students who come across the questions I post, but apparently I am using the forum in the wrong way. Thank you for the best of luck! I see you are a BSN and hope to reach that level of education one day. Anyone going through any nursing program knows it is not easy so congratulations!

This forum is totally for advice and guidance! I think if you just add in your own thinking first, people like myself won't misperceive your intention. I see some posters have helped you already in the other threads, so by all means continue if you see fit. I was just offering my opinion but I could very well be in the minority! I'm not that far removed from being in school myself so I totally understand seeking some help. :)
