Moving out of state

Published

I have a question for anyone who may have been in a similar situation. I currently live in Arizona and have my pre-req's to get into the nursing program for the Community College here. I might have to move to California. The question is, if I have my pre-req's will I be able to transfer to a California school? Will I get out of state charges if admitted into a program there?

I was just looking into moving to CA as well, from MN. I do believe that out of state charges apply for a lot of programs. Not sure about CCs. Some schools do and some don't. Some schools aren't admitting out of state students period (it takes a year to establish residency and you might have to do that).

CA is also one of the most competitive places in the country, both for schools and jobs. Ultimately I think I decided I'm better off here :-/

I have a BS from New Mexico State University and took nursing pre-reqs at a CC in Virginia. I was able to transfer all my credits from my BS and from the CC into a BSN in Hawaii. I'd definitely apply now if you know what schools in CA you'd like to attend, and I agree with ShlebyaStar, CA is pretty competitive. I have a friend in Hawaii thinking about moving to CA and almost every school talks about a "lottery system" and wait lists. I don't mean to discourage you, just do your research ahead of time or get on a list ASAP. Best of luck to you!

You will definitely have to pay out of state tuition unless you can prove the move is related to the military.

I live in California, and yes, there are wait lists and lotteries (depending on what school). What area are you looking to move to? If your pre-req's are from an accredited college, then you shouldn't have a problem transferring them. You will probably have to live in CA for a year before you are considered an in state student. I would start applying to the schools as soon as possible.

Unless you go to a private school (i think) there will be out of state fees. Unless you have tons of your parents monies to blow, the move isn't worth it and very risky if education and nursing is your priority . Not all classes will be transferable you may have to fight some.
