Interviews and Acceptance

I have a quick question regarding teh Amy Graduate Program.

Do you have to currently be in the Army to apply for the US Army Graduate Program for Anesthesia Nursing? Once accepted into the program is there a specific school you attend, or does the Army pay for the expenses at whatever school one is accepted to?

You can apply as a civilian to the active duty program. If accepted you will transition onto active duty to attend school. The training is conducted by the Army but the degree is issued by University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Phase I is at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio TX for 1 year and then phase II is at one of 8 different training sites around the country. After you finish school you will owe 4.5years active duty. You will have full pay and allowances while attending school. There is another program for the reserves called STRAP program where you can attend any school to which you are accepted. I don't know all the in's and out's , but you can do a search on the CRNA threads or the Military Nursing forum for info on this program.

Just a note to consider: you sign the contract for active duty BEFORE you finish CRNA school. This means that if you flunk out, quit, or otherwise fail to complete the rigorous Army program, they still have you for the duration of your contract and your job will be based on the needs of the Army. A good friend of mine, and a fantastic ICU nurse, is now staffing a labor and delivery unit for this very reason.

Sounds like some good motivation for me not to flunk out, quit, or otherwise fail to complete the rigorous Army program.

I was an active duty army medic in the past and saw this same thing in my enlisted training. Soldiers unable to meet the standard were re-assigned to different specialties based on the needs of the Army (One guy went from medic trainee to Quatermaster another Infantry). At least, if this happens, I would remain an officer and an RN.

Good advice to consider all the angles before making a committment.
