Interventions

Does anyone know how to distinguish among, primary, secondary and tertiary interventions? I keep getting the questions wrong on my test. The book doesn't help much.

Primary - health promotion and prevention

Secindary - screening

Tertiary - rehabilitative

Yet, I get it wrong

I'll give some examples and maybe they will help.

Primary/prevention: having a class on smoking cessation. You are telling the people why they should quit smoking before they have lung cancer. You are trying to PREVENT lung cancer. Teaching high school students about STDs. You are giving them info so that hopefully they make good decisions and can PREVENT STDs.

Secondary/screening: vision and hearing screenings for children, cholesterol screenings, blood pressure screenings. You are trying to identify people w/ possible vision/hearing problems, high cholesterol, high blood pressure. There is no treatment involved....just the screening.

Tertiary/treatment: Patient who already has diabetes goes to a class on diabetes management. They are learning what they can do to control a disease they already have.

Whatever the question is, just decide, does this person already have the disease or is it something they are screening for, or is it just something we are trying to prevent. Be careful though, some questions, as it sounds like you have come across, aren't so straightforward. I don't have a good example of one that kinda makes it sound like both but if I come across one I will post it. I'm not sure if this helped or not but hopefully it will. Best of luck!

This helps a great deal! Please post question as soon as you come across one. I think that's the type I may be having trouble with.
