I have just this week applied to a periop internship. I am curious about a few questions and since you are fresh from interviewing maybe you can answer them for me. Do you know what prompted them to call you for an interview? Was it something on your resume, cover letter that caught their eye? After you submitted for the position did you keep in contact? What did they say they were looking for in an individual? What did they base their decision on. Thanks, if you can answer any question, I apprecialte it, or if you have any info you can pass on to me, great.

the internship I applied to is 6 months and starts in September in a large hospital, 26 OR's, sounds intimidatein but also really exciting. I am crossing my fingers I get called.:)

We have had some hospitals coming to our school to recruit us. The hsopital I decided to work in said they are going to take 2 graduates for a new internship at that hospital. I had already decided I wanted to work at this hospital. But all the OR jobs I saw, you needed CC or med/surg for 1 year before they would accept you. So I saw my chance.

But I only applied to the New grad job. With that application, I choose 3 areas I wanted to interview with. OR was #1. I called and ararnged for a day to shadow without the pressure of an assignment over me to make sure I wanted it. I had a great day. That was 3 weeks ago. The HR deparment started calling us in for interviews 2 weeks ago. I had on with a med/surg floor. The HR was realy pushy about me taking tht job. But I kept pushing for an interview with OR. I finally got one this past Tues.

First they explained everyting I would be doing such as the 9 month orientation in each area (ob, ortho, GI). They explained how in the OR you work with the surgeon, surgical techs, and anesthists. She said you either love the OR or hate it. she went on telling me about all I will experince. Then she asked why I wanted the OR. I told them I didn't want to be a floor nurse and why. She continued to tell me how I would be on call once a month. There were other things like the time spent in a classroom. But really, they didn't ask to many questions. Sfter they expalined everything, they asked if I was still interested. Of course I said yes.

I didn't send in a resume. I just filled out the new grad packet we were given. on it I stressed my interst in the OR program and that's it.

I already work at the hospital as a CNA II. So Since that day I shadowed, I would use our email and send messages to the OR director and tell her how I enjoyed my day and I really was interested in a position. We had several messages over the last few weeks. So that may have helped.

Thanks Regina for your info. This internship is a 3 interview process, essay on why want to be an or nurse, and shadow day. I have obsticles in front of me, one being I do not work as a tech in this hospital, two I have been home rasieng kids for years and I only have under a year tech expereince. Other than my honor grades, I am not the best candidate on paper for the position. My plan is to be persistant to get that first interview. I am also looking at doing a shadow soon. Any other things that pop in your head like how persistant were you and you want to pass it on great.:roll

You will love the OR. Get a notebook that will fit in a scrub jacket pocket, and start taking notes from day one.

I still have my "brain " after 8 years as an OR nurse.

I list by procedure, the by Dr. all meds equipment position etc for a quick reference.

Congrats!!! The notebook idea is a keeper. Everyone in the OR should have one. None of our docs do anything similar. LOL It's like they get together and say if you are doing it this way, I will do it that way.

The notebook is a must!
