how do I start?

Published

Hi, Im a nursing student that is having a hard time figuring out were to start my nursing career. I have not found any one area of nursing that I would like to begin in. All I hear is start out in Med/Surg however, all the nurses that I spoke too hate it. Am I setting myself up for failure starting in Med/Surg?

hello,

i hope what i am about to say helps you, negativity in the nursing field is rampid, do not allow yourself to be a victim of it. if they those few state "they hate their jobs". i want you to ask yourself a few questions, why would a person who is trained to take care of people hate a job that is taking care of people? also why do they use the word hate?

they could say, i would prefer to be in a different area, cardiology, ccu, ob.... etc..etc.. i chose to trust what i see not what i hear. you go where you will be happy and if med surg is the first step then do it.... it will give in invaluable experience. and you can always move to other areas to decide if you would like to specialize.

i hope this helps.

Yeah I heard from many nurses that we should start from MedSurg floor cause it helps to build our foundation. Another nurse that I talked to lately encouraged me to go to CCU or ICU instead. But I'm not sure, by the time I finish school, I would be prepared (mentally, skills and knowledge wise) to be in ICU/CCU.
