Hello,
How about last night I studied for 2 hours on lab values out of Saunders. GOD knows I want to move to the next step doing other Chapters moving right along but just can't because I did horrible on this Chapter and had to go back and review knowing the Normal lab values. Does anyone think this is good what I'm doing? I even did the same questions so far 2 days in a row. What do you all think?

hey vanessa! :typing
the way i could learn those values was by doing flash cards.
i did flash cards on these:
pt
ptt
inr
bun
cr
spec gravity
ca
k
iop
albumin
cvp
wbc
platelets
hgb/hct on male and female
also by knowing how the patho works in the disease process is important when you come across with a question with labs, especially if it has s/s and v/s.
hope this mini info will help ya!
im sure you will get reply's from others with good tips as well!
good luck vanessa!
just keep focused girl, you can do it! don't frustrate yourself. just keep practicing over and over and it will stick to ya!

Thanks so much for your advice I really needed to know this. And I will stay focused because I really want these license. :bowingpur
Also, when you say the patho in the Disease Process how did you included this on your flash cards can you give me an example?

no problem at all my dear. that's what allnurses.com buddies are all about....to help a lending hand here! :hgu:
regarding the patho of diseases on flash cards, i actually didn't make any for those. but that's not a bad idea either vanessa to do.
but in order to understand the lab values that affect the topic of the disease you have to know how the patho with the labs that work with the disease process.
hmmm? let me think here....:thnkg:
for example im trying to think while typing......
oh? ok.....for example pancreatitis.....know that the lipase and amylase will be elevated. so what's the normal lab values for lipase and amylase?
another example is diabetes insipdus....know that pt will be having a lot of urine output and will be dehydrated so the sodium levels will be really high and specific gravity will be low........so know what is the normal sodium level what is the normal specific gravity. what sx will the pt be having?
same thing with siadh........low sodium level......low specific gravity.......fluid volume over load. you want to restrict fluids.....
so what i did i made flash cards or actually i stapled 8 sheets of papers and made key points of each disease process.
hypothyroidism
hyperthyroidism
addisons
cushings
di
siadh
hypoparathyroidism
hyperparathyroidism
and i just wrote bullets (key points) for each diagnosis.
hope this helps!
post me or email me anytime if you want!
