How long is too long?

I have interview with North Well for a fellowship in Sleepy Hollow in NY. It has been 2.5 weeks since my second interview. I was not informed of a specific date that I would be notified of job only that I should hear either way (one person said the job starts in August next person disagreed). I was wondering if emailing the recruiter about the status of the job is a smart idea? This is my top job prospective eventhough I do have a job offer at a medical rehab facility out of state. I am worried about being unemployed much longer since it has been 6 months since I have been licensed, but do not want to ruin my chances with the fellowship.

Thank you for any help.

Did you send a thank you to the person you interviewed with? If not, you could always send an email thanking them for the interview and say that you're interested in the position and see if that gets you a response. I don't think it seems unreasonable after 2.5 weeks to check in and see what's going on.

Do they have any specific instructions regarding contacting them? When I applied for my job it specifically stated not to contact them because they had too many applicants to be receiving update emails from. If there isn't that policy though, I wouldn't think that there would be any harm in following up to see.
