Going back to school...

Published

Hello,

I am a new member of this forum and I am looking for a little bit of advice. I live in the Philadelphia area and have been looking into programs and options to go back to school. I graduated from undergrad over 5 years ago with a BA in history, and I went on to go to Drexel's iSchool for a Master's in Library Science. I considered going into healthcare in my 20s, but I did not. I'm now working as a librarian, but I really want to go back to school to pursue a Nurse Practitioner degree (possibly PhD). I have been researching programs and feeling really overwhelmed. I know that I will have to go do some undergraduate prerequisite programs in order to qualify for any of the fast-track BSN programs here (Like Drexel's), but am really unsure where to start. I don't have many of the required sciences (Though I might have a Chemistry credit from my undergrad. I'm waiting on those transcripts to get here). I was thinking that I should take the science classes at Community College (probably CCP) and then apply to a fast-track program, or even a regular BSN. Does anyone have any recommendations? Has anyone been in this situation before? Is the fast-track program a good idea? Any help or advice is much appreciated!

Hello!

My situation is similar to your's...I graduated a few years ago with a B.S. and then went on to get my M.Ed. Nursing had always been in the back of my mind, but I didn't go for it (my undergrad didn't have a nursing program). Well, I finally decided to go for it, and now I am taking my prerequisites for an accelerated BSN program. There a quite a few ABSN programs in this area: Drexel, Jefferson, Villanova, West Chester, DeSales, & probably some ones I forgot. Most require bio, chem, A & P I and II, Microbio, and various psychology/ethics classes (depends on the school). Most also will not take science classes over 5 years (I had to retake Chem and take a Bio placement test because of this). You can definitely do it, it will just take time to do the prerequisites. I am taking mine at a community college, which is definitely the cheaper route. If this is something you really want to do, I would look up the area schools, see which pre-reqs you need to take, and sign up for classes in the Fall.

Good luck to you!

Thank you! I have been looking into classes, though so many of the prerequisites require science labs, which are often during the day! (Or the lab is at night but the class is during the day). Are you going the full-time route? I'd like to be able to work at least part time while I take classes. Are you working as well as taking classes?
