Getting into nursing school?

Hey,

I'm new to this site and had some questions about transferring in to a nursing program, namely NIU's. My pre-requisite GPA is solid, around a 3.8, but my overall is a lot weaker (I was in engineering for a little while...never again), somewhere around a 3.0. Here come my questions:

Do transfer students really get picked last? On NIU's site, it says that transfer students are considered as a separate pool, so I'm guessing they leave a certain number of spots open to transfers?

Is my GPA high enough? If anyone out there went to NIU, posting a GPA or anything would great!

Now, my last question isn't meant to make anyone go off on a rant about equality (which I would love to talk about, but not here), but does gender/race effect admissions? I ask because I'm a male as well as a minority.

    I don’t know anything about NIU, but I will comment on the last question. I think it will be easier for you to get accepted if the selection process included either an interview or you were required to provide sex and ethnic information on your application. However, you will still be required to meet the minimum entrance requirements (GPA, entrance exams, interview scores, ect…). Not only is the nursing profession pushing for more men to enter nursing (minoritynurse.com), but there is also a desire to have more nurses from varying backgrounds. This helps facilities to provide culturally competent care. I am glad to hear you decided to go into nursing. Good luck!

    I do not know anything about NIU, either; however I did all of my nursing prereqs in one state and had to move right before applying to the nursing programs to another state. The only BSN program in the area that I applied to went soley on a point system and what your score was on the NET. What was unfair for myself, as a transfer student, was you received a lot of points if your prereqs were from that university. I was put on a waitlist, BUT I got in the first time I applied. We also have a lot of minorities and males in my class!
