getting a NICU position

I'm going to be graduating in December and I want to begin nursing in a NICU as soon as possible. Does anyone have any advice as to how to progress to a NICU position quickly or straight out of school?

I'd say start looking for internship positions at any hospital (especially the larger hospitals like Baylor, etc.) in your area. Internships start in January & June - but they begin interviewing for them 2-3 months before the start date. It's the only way I've heard of someone getting NICU, at least around here.

Also, you could call your area hospitals and speak to the Nurse Recruiter and ask them how to get a NICU position - what they look for, how many GN's they hire, etc.

Good Luck & God Bless!:balloons:

My friend got a job in the NICU right out of school. She expressed interest and got a spot there for her preceptorship while still in school. I'd say its a good idea to try and get a spot in your "specialty" area of choice when you do your senior yr. nursing school preceptorship (if your school has one.. some programs dont offer preceptorships). Also its not a bad idea to work in a NICU/nursery as a CNA. If you can't go straight into the NICU, perhaps applying for jobs in the nursery may help as well. Good luck to you!
