Fresh Out of School

I'm graduating with my BSN this coming April. I've been job hunting lately and would like any insight into entry level RN positions? My neighbor has been an RN for about 15 yrs and she suggested starting out on an ICU floor or med-surg and then go from there. Also was wondering about getting ACLS certified. ICU jobs require it, so if I apply for those jobs would I then go through a basic course before going through the ACLS course and skills test?

The key to starting out is... starting...

My point is, you need to get A job... any job... to start building professional experience. If you want to be an ICU nurse then certainly apply for ICU new grad jobs but, as you surely realize, finding work is a challenge for many new grads and you really should apply to any new-grad opening that you can.

Some people advocate doing ACLS right away, others don't. I'm in the former category... it's quick (2 days), easy, and fairly cheap ($300). You'll learn something that may help in interviews and it shows that you're not complacent.

Do a quick search and you'll find a range of opinions on ACLS for new grads.

I'm definitely going into this with both eyes open. Applying to any open position that will help me build experience. Actually just received a call back about my application to an SIU opening. I'm reading up on meds, rhythms, etc to prepare. I think I will look into taking the ACLS course as it will be good knowledge to have going into my last semester. Thanks!
