externship question

I am a junior nursing student in a 4 year BSN program and am looking to get a nurse externship for the summer. I am interested in working in postpartum/NICU after I graduate. I'm debating whether I should get an externship in postpartum/NICU or go for a more general one like med surg or even the ER. I've heard its suggested that its good to have general med surg experience, particularly before you specialize, so I'm not sure which one I would benefit more from. Thanks!

    Get the experience in your specialty of choice. You can never network too much! My externship was just supposed to be for the summer, but they liked me and are keeping me per diem up to and after I graduate. It would be very easy to get a line there if I wanted to! Good luck and the experience is irreplaceable.
