Wll, I applied to Newman's first class, so my interview was in early 1999. Started class in August 1999. So, the interview is fuzzy in my mind, and there may have been some evolution of that interview process. But, I do remember that ethics was hit pretty hard (what would you do if a surgeon ordered you to give blood to a JH patient who had signed the no blood waiver/order?) We spent about 15 minutes on this question. I'd also know mechanisms of action of dopamine, and the differences between NTG and nipride. These are NOT all inclusive, so I'd study up in general, as well. The other thing about the Newman interview (and probably all interviews) is that there will be a couple of things they are after. First, they will try to hit something you have not obviously studied for, to check your knowledge base. Next, they will try to ask a question you don't know the answer to, to see how you handle the situation. I think on one or two questions like that I answered "I don't know the answer to that. That's why I want to attend this program, for the opportunity to expand my knowledge."

Questions regarding swan ganz cath, ventilators (parameters, why?), still doing the JW ethics thing, mechanism of action for pressors and inotropes. Some of it is guided by your experience, for instance if you come from a neuro unit, you will probably have more neuro questions vs. someone from cardiac. Standard why do you want to do this, how will you manage your _____ while in school. There are between 3 and 5 interviewers in the interview. ( Program director, clinical director, CRNA, Anesthesiologist, nursing department head) they usually give you no indication of how you answered a particular question, the next person just asks the next question. It is not too bad, Good Luck!!
