What are the opportunities for either an ER or OR nurse in the (Army, Navy, or Air Force)? Seems like I read a thread that stated OR nurses don't have as many opportunities for advancement in other areas of nursing as ER nurses. Any information on what assignments either would receive.
Thanks.

Gottago,
I have been avoiding answering this question, because I think it has been covered in other threads. Having said that I don't think right now there are any more advancement problems being an ER or OR nurse in the AF vs. any other type of nurse in the AF.
Things you need to know about being a nurse in the AF:
1. We have the lowest promotion rates of all officers in the AF.
2. It generally takes us 2-4 yrs longer to make Major vs. our line side counterparts.
3. There are not many AF bases with hospitals anymore, and there are a few more that have same day surgery. The biggest AF hospitals are Wilford Hall in San Antonio, Wright Patterson in Dayton, Keesler in Biloxi, Eglin in Ft Walton Beach, and Travis in Ca. There are also some Triservice opportunities in places like Germany.
I hope this helps. You are more than welcome to PM me. I will be on vacation for the next week. It can also take me a little time to answer questions anymore since I started nurse anesthetist school.
