i have a wonderful preceptor but when she isnt there i am precepted by other seasoned nurses. what this substitute nurse show me saved me from a huge med error. we have a medication system called adminRx. what this entails....the MAR gets scanned to the pharmacy..they type it into the computer and you have your meds, times, dose right there in front of you (the system has the five rights of a medpass). all you need to do is verify the person, scan the meds against the computer MAR, scan the armband (which will tell you if you got the right person also). this is a great system most of the time. my substitute preceptor taught me to go to the charts every morning and write down the meds and times from the original MAR on a scratch sheet for my pts. then go to the computer to compare it to medpass on adminrx. i was like ugh! why!!!! well at 700 everything was okay. but when 1200 came i had some overdue meds popping up on my screen. i knew for this patient i had already given the meds and its was only scheduled for once a day not twice. some nut in pharmacy got happy hands and typed it in all over again. everyone was like good catch because the drugs were atenolol, benicar, prednisone, etc. before this catch, i thought why go write down your meds and times because its right on the computer. well heres the answer: if there are any changes from what you write down. it stands out like a bulleyes. i do know many many nurses rely on adminrx and dont check the original MAR because of time constraints but if it takes a couple of more minutes then its worth being late with the mediocre things like trying to get all the assessments in the computer on time. thanks sooo much nancynurse:bow:

thanks for the heads up, I'm just starting orientation and that is something I will keep in mind. that's a good way to double check yourself.
