Direct entry MSN or Direct entry DNP (non-nursing background)?

Published

Hello all,

To keep this short and concise, I have my B.S. in molecular biology with a minor in chemistry and I'm currently a post-bac student. Although, I enjoy the work of a pharmacist; I'm not willing to gamble with that career given the current job market.

I am confident I am making the correct decision, but I am having trouble deciding which programs I should pursue. Should I apply to a direct entry MSN or DNP? I don't have any nursing experience or licenses at all, so there are only a handful of programs that offer a direct entry MSN or DNP for non nursing backgrounds (I have extensive volunteer and pharmacy experience but looking to get nursing experience atm).

I am curious to know if it's worth to enroll into a MSN program if the end goal is to become a DNP? From the looks of the prerequisites of a MSN vs. DNP program, they are quite similar so maybe I'm not understanding the differences in programs correctly? For those who has gone through this process, what steps did you take to get into a DNP program?
