Specialties PICU

I've been working at my hospital for almost 5 years now. I started in clinic which I thought was good at first because of the hours but as a new grad, I didn't learn much and they weren't looking for full time. Anyway, I landed a position on the surgical floor in this paediatric hospital which I absolutely love. It took me a year to get comfortable with the routine and to make friends. I genuinely love working on this floor. I really like the hospital and taking care of these kids. I've never liked a job this much BUT there's a problem - I hate night shifts. When I first started, I loved night shifts which I still don't remember why. Not only am I in my 30s which means it's hard on my body but I dread going to work esp during the summer time when it's so nice outside and people are out on the patio while I'm on my way to work. It's not like I go out a lot or party but I'd rather not spend my Thursday or Friday nights going to work. Yes I get it! It's part of doing shift work. Don't get me wrong. I don't mind working weekends as long it's day shifts even stay holidays. I just don't wanna work night shifts. I'm so sick of it and I dread it so much. What do I do? I wish this hospital would start giving people day shifts. I have an amazing group of coworkers and I would hate to leave because of it. I'm not super outgoing so it takes male such a long time to warm up to people and get to know them. Every once in a while, I think about this. Sometimes I say I'll just tough it out and see what happens. Any one on the same boat?

All you can really do is either put your name on the wait list or look for other employment. Nights really aren't all that bad if you find a routine that works for you. When I leave the hospital for my long stretch of days off, I force myself to stay up all day and sleep that night. Just like that I'm back on a regular sleep cycle. Granted the first 2 days I sleep for 12 hours, but it works about as good as it's gonna get.
