Hello everyone,
I got my degree in neuroscience and is going to start NYU ABSN in spring 2018. I want to get CRNA after this. I know it's pretty far ahead but I just want to do some research. Is there any CRNA programs in the NYC region? I am okay with traveling if I need to. Can someone provide me some general expectations for the program? A lot of CRNA programs require at least 1-2 years of experience in critical care. How likely is it to get a job in the ER as a new nurse? What are some steps I can take after passing the NCLEX?
Sorry about the number of questions, I am generally lost and have no one to ask!
Thank you very much!!

There are several nurse anesthesia programs in New York, but the only one in NYC is through Columbia University. It's best to check out the website of each program you're considering for specific admission requirements, but at a minimum this typically includes 1+ year of critical care experience (this almost always means ICU and not ER experience), a GPA >3.0, and several letters of recommendation. Most successful applicants have several years of solid ICU experience, strong cumulative/science GPA (>3.4), solid leadership experience (charge nurse, preceptor, committees, volunteering, etc.), good GRE scores (>150 in verbal, >150 in quantitative), and shadowing experience.
For starters you'll need to get ICU experience. Some hospitals will hire new grad RNs directly into ICU and others won't. Focus on being a strong ICU nurse for at least a couple years, which will set the foundation for school applications and your success as a CRNA. Get involved with the AACN and your local chapter. Shadow a CRNA at least once to better understand what it is that they do. Good luck.
Thank you so much for your advice!
