BSN program turns into BS

I just finished an accelerated RN to BSN program (currently filling a 9 credit deficit) and one of my classmates tells me that she received her degree, and it is a BS with a focus in Nursing. Is that the same as a BSN, and if not what can we do about it. This program was not cheap, and I don't think that I would have participated if I had known about it before-hand. My original acceptance letter states; "RN to BSN".

There is nothing wrong with a BS with a major in nursing. In fact, within the traditional academic world, it is a higher level degree than a BSN. It's all just a matter of the administrative structure of your school -- whether there is a separate "school of nursing" that offers its own degrees -- or whether the "department of nursing" is a part of a larger college that offers a BS degree with a focus in nursing.

For all practical purposes, the two different degrees are inter-changable. They reflect the same level of achievement and are considered identical for the purpose of licensure, graduate school, etc.

To find out the particulars of YOUR school and why they changed the name of the degree offered, you'll have to ask your school. I recommend you do that to give yourself peace of mind. But as long as the program is a part of a reputable college/university with full academic accreditation, it doesn't matter which degree they offer. A lot of well-respected schools provide BS degrees and others provide BSN's. Both are just fine.

Thank you for your responses.

To answer the one question that I got, The program is through Keuka College in NY state. They have an accredited 4 year BSN program, but I was in their Accelerated RN to BSN program, and I'm not sure if they would be required to procure seperate accreditation for that, or not. (or if the program was accredited) I assumed (don't say it) that having an accredited BSN program meant that the accelerated program was accredited too. Is there a way to check accreditation on-line?
