Applying for externship help

Published

Hello. I am looking for some help with applying externships. I am in a very tough market here (N NJ) with lots of competition. I want to secure an externship for myself this summer and the time to apply is now. I am looking for advice on how to make my application stand out? I have a 3.9GPA, I am on the Dean's list, member of the honor society, already hold a BA in a different subject (I am getting an aassociates in nursing though) and I am a member of the student nursing association. I am getting letters of recommendation form some of my nursing instructors, but I am looking for some real world advice. What are they looking for??

Thanks in advance.

Your academic standing is already stellar so that should bespeak volumes for you. The fact that you're also a second degree student leans heavily in your favor, in that you've already finished college. In terms of putting the shine to the resume, I would prepare myself for the things that could be required while on the unit, ie. CPR (BLS) certification at a minimum, and ACLS PALS if you can swing it. This will show them that you're very serious about yourself and the job, and you'll be leagues ahead of the competition.

Further, if you're in good health with NO problems (eg. Hypertension, Diabetes, Allergies) then SAY so. If you're a medical wreck, don't say anything unless they ask. Likewise if you have never been in trouble, then SAY so. If you have a rap sheet a mile long, again don't say anything unless they ask. For the interview (and this is the part that most beginners flounder), go in polished. Women dress neat and conservatively (dress like your grandmother, ie. don't show the knees), without body piercings, nose jewel pins, etc. and light on the cosmetics (ie. don't go in as the Mascara Queen); men likewise in Jacket and tie, leather shoes (not sneakers), shaved and no mohawk. Remember that hospitals are all about uptight, no fashion sense, and ultra conservative.

By asking such a question more than 6 months in advance, I can see that you're already more than prepared for a good presentation. I'm sure you'll do quite well for yourself. Anyways, good luck.

You sound like you are in the same boat as me...and my advice..be enthusiastic. Talk about the skills you have learned in your clinicals, and talk about the skills you still need/want to practice. Show your enthusiasm for learning how to be a nurse on the unit you are applying for. And be genuine in that enthusiasm. You can be a great nurse book wise, but how are you at the bedside? I just got a nurse extern position and I KNOW it was because I was almost giddy when they were telling me everything I can do to improve my skills to get up to par to walk onto the floor as an RN when I graduate. Nothing will top the enthusiasm and desire you show to be a nurse. Good luck!
