I am have been toying with the idea of applying to the VANAP program offered through the Veteran's hospital in ATL through Emory University. I am a veteran of the Air Force and served my country for 11 years and so veteran care is something dear to me and I think it makes me a good candidate. My only concern I have is if I focus my nursing education only on veteran care would that not adequately prepare me for a job outside the VA? During the program, students will engage in specialized training in the following:
For instance, I would like the opportunity to work with children one day and if I apply to a hospital outside the VA would that look bad that I did not receive training in other areas within a university hospital? I know some hospitals require new graduates to complete internal training upon hiring so maybe its really nothing to be concerned about. Its an amazing opportunity and am strongly considering applying but I am really interested in hearing feedback before the deadline (in like two days). Thanks for your input.
