I am trying to implement an annual competency for my group of inserters. Does anyone out there have on in their facility? Looking for ideas and tips...

Thanks,

Picc Ace - I have competencies on Picc insertion and MST. If you email me with a fax number I will share with you. My email is [email protected] -

I am also looking at PICC competencies.

I would like to know if your insertion nurses read the xrays for

placement?

Thanks for any help,

Mary

Determined one---Fax # 608-258-6325.

Mary---We don't technically read them at this point but we're working on getting that added to the program. The issue arises especially on PM's or nights when there's no Rad. around to do the reading. In that case some of us will take a look at the film and proceed as needed---a line in the IJ or curled in the subclavian is pretty easy to see,so no point in waiting the half hour it could take to get it officially read. If I can tell it's good or just needs a little adjustment,I'll proceed with the dressing and securement while I wait for the call.

D,

Thanks for the information. We currently write in the progress notes where the line is placed after we check the film. Someone recently in the safety dept found this out and nearly died. So now we are looking at the standards. My thoughts are, if you are qualified to place the line, than you better be able to say where it is. This to me is not diagnosis, it's line placement.

Thanks again,

M
