ACNP autonomy?

Published

hello all,

i am new to the board and have a question. my apologies if this has been answered before. ive applied to ACNP w/ hopes to start in august. i will be going to school in the south. my question, in states like oregon, wash, alaska, arizona and a few others, NPs can practice independently w/out physician involvement. is this only for NPs that specialize in primary care or all specialties, such as ACNP?

my goal is to have a great deal of autonomy in managing and treating patients. much of my experience has come w/in the ER setting and i see how NPs can be abused w/in the ER. my hopes is that this does not happen to me, as i have no desire to work in ER as an NP.

which area do ACNPs have a lot of freedom of practice? Trauma, CVSICU, ICU?

thanks a lot!

How much autonomy you're going to have in practice will be heavily dependent upon the unit and hospital themselves in part, with the influence of your legal rights and responsibilities... In terms of whether you're legally allowed to practice without the supervision of a physician, the state boards of nursing determine those guidelines individually I believe.
