absn is it worth it?

Published

Hi all,

I am currently looking into a ABSN program and am looking for some incite on my situation. I have been thinking about going back for a nursing degree for years now and am finally ready to make the jump..

I currently work as a Occupational athletic trainer doing onsite injury diagnosis and rehab for occupational injuries. I work with a OHN and a NP who are awesome and have given me lots of ideas (night school, absn etc)...My current position does not allow me to attend any night or part time programs due to the hours. So, this leaves me to looking into a year long absn program( I hold a BS and MS in sports medicine so my pre-reqs are satisfied), I know i wont be able to work during this program, however it will allow me to be out in a year, and then getting valuable experience. My main goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner working in orthopedics.

The one thing which is holding me back is the amount the school is going to cost... so I will have to take out a 30K loan. I currently have no debt and have enough saved so i can pay a portion of the tuition. I have supported my wife through her undergrad, and sshe will be working while i go back for my absn (and is on board with the idea). I am looking for someones outside incite on this idea.....is this too cash to take out for a ABSN? any other thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks reading!

How much of a pay bump are you expecting?

Looking around a minimum of 5-10k bump, however if I made the same salary as I'm making now( which is lower than all the entry bsn salaries I have looked up) I would be happy
