Good morning every one,OK...** I have this friend (not really, It's me) that just got accepted in to an ASN nursing program.* However, after researching the background check requirement, I am becoming a little discouraged. For you see, I have had a criminal domestic violence charge against me.* I was 25 at the time and it occurred in another state while I was active duty military, around 1995.* In 2008 I had it expunged from my record.* THIS IS THE ONLY TIME IN MY LIFE I HAVE EVER BEEN IN TROUBLE WITH THE LAW !!!!I am now 44 and looking to start a new career and attend nursing school. The thing is, I am scared to death that I will disclose this on the application and I will be denied an application to test (ATT) for the NCLEX and will be rejected / denied from the California Board Of Nurses..Does anyone have any advice?* Has anyone been in a similar situation?* How should I handle this?*Thank you in advance for your responses......

Board of Registered Nursing - Applicant Frequently Asked Questions
Like it or not, you will have to disclose this to the CA BRN. If you failed to disclose and they found out, you've really shot yourself in the foot.
When it comes time to apply, you need to provide all of the documentation they request regarding your conviction. Personally, I'd get a lawyer involved as well, especially if the BRN decides that you need to appear in front of them to explain things.
You could contact the BRN and see what else they have to say, but keep in mind that they will not make an official decision about your application until you actually apply. This means that you'll have to take the risk on nursing school: because a nursing school decides to accept your criminal record doesn't mean that the BRN has to as well. Yes, it's unfair. And yes, sometimes it happens.
Best of luck.
