I was just wondering if there are any metro-Detroit NP's who could give me a little insight on which school/program they chose. I'm hoping to go the way of critical care. I worked on a NeuroICU for two years as a contingent CNA, and really fell in love with the challenging atmosphere and dedicated/knowledgable staff.

I've looked into UofD, UofM, and WSU, and all seem to have rigorous ANCP programs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't one of these schools have a ADN to MSN program at one point?? Any thoughts on that?

I'm still working on my ADN, but would like to get an idea of what options I have available.

Hi phluteloop! Welcome from a fellow Metro Detroiter! guess what? I am an ACNP graduate from Wayne State U. There are only 2 such programs in our state, the other one is at U of Michigan Ann Arbor. U of Detroit does not have ACNP, they only offer FNP but they do have PA studies as well. They have one of the oldest PA programs in the state. Oakland U has an acute care CNS program but no NP equivalent.

Both U of M and Wayne are good schools. U of M has a great national reputation but has one of the highest tution fees in the state. Wayne's tution is about 25% of U of M's. Their programs in medicine and nursing are also pretty good. Twenty three percent of all nurses in Metro Detroit are Wayne grads and sixty percent of practicing physicians (including resident physicians) in the state have had all or part of their training at Wayne State. I'm not trying to sell my school but that's a great deal of alumni in the area that an NP can network with.

Wayne offers ADN to MSN. The program takes 3 years full time. That's because the first year is BSN completion. You also have to take the GRE prior to advancing to the MSN portion of the program.

Thanks for the great information! I'm partial to the WSU medical programs as well, as I work within the DMC and I'm surrounded by many Waybe grad's, both in medicine and nursing. I've decided to look into transferring into their BSN program with the classes I have under my belt through HFCC. With all the wait lists at the community colleges, it might be best. Could possibly be done within the same amount of time, but with a bacchelors degree.

I'll be going to the admissions meeting next month.

I too am an ACNP student at WSU. I like the program and the people so far. (In my 3rd term) I believe that they do have an ADN to MSN program.
