I was wondering the difference between LTC facilities and retirement communitys? Are retirement communitys a bit different or a little better than a LTC facility?

I started out working in LTC and I loved the chaos and how you always had something to do. Now I am currently working in a Assisted Living Center. Instead of being a nurse I feel as If I am a waitress and maid. And to top that off I no longer get to use my nursing skills like I use to. Now I only do assessments of patients and pass medicine occasionely. And the Assisted Living is a much slower pace. Not much to do and there is alot of sitting. Hope this helps out.

The assisted living centers that I've worked in (agency nurse), are a lot more "laid back" than the LTCs I've been. Mostly what I had to do, was an occasional glucose stick and pass some meds. Otherwise, I seem to spend my time playing butler. Yes, you can't keep up your skill level there, but it was always a nice break from the "chaos" of a busy LTC. I will say it takes a little getting used to having a patient open the door in response to your med pass, and say, "Hi, come on in! I just made some cookies!". :rotfl:
