Your Favorite and Your Weirdest

Ok, gotta fun question... What is your favorite nursing skill, and what is the weirdest thing about you as a nurse, that maybe not everyone knows about? I'll start.

My favorite nursing skill is venipuncture, be it phlebotomy or IV starts, I love it.

The weird thing about me is the fact that one of my favorite pastimes is watching autopsies.

For obvious reasons, I don't mention that one too much. I am probably the only person in the country to have FAVORITE forensic pathologist. Sigh...oh, well.

I enjoy autopsies also...At the age of 10, I told my parents I wanted to be a forensic pathologist. Not sure what happened to my dream lol.

I hope people don't think I'm crazy for posting this, but my favorite nursing skill is putting in NG tubes. No, I don't like torturing my patients, I just like doing them. Maybe because you get an instant result that you succeeded?? I don't know. I work on a surgical floor so alot of our patients have them.

I love iv starts. Nothing like a brisk flash to get you going! The weird thing- I hate blood! LOL. Started nursing school not sure if I'd make it- then realized I really only hate seeing my blood. :chuckle

Maybe this is weird AND my favorite...I dunno...I like doing takedowns. Maybe I should've been a cop. I know a lot of ER nurses like the adrenaline of doing those intense traumas...I guess that's my adrenaline rush...I have the ability to stay very calm and directive, and get the job done when the situation calls for that last-resort situation.

I also really, REALLY enjoy dealing with very violent, very psychotic patients...My goal in nursing is to work in a forensic prison. So I dunno...they're both weird! lol But I've been told that I'm an odd duck so the hat fits. ;)

My favorite skill is taking care of vent patients. Everything involved in caring for them makes my day! As for weirdest...hmmmm....I love being involved with codes and the adrenaline rush that comes with it. I hate to see the patients suffer, but I love the chaos that ensues for some odd reason.

Also loving iv starts here! Give me your blood, guts, and nasty infected wounds! But I HATE HATE HATE code brown! Oh and if you puke, well... I might puke with you! Lol

I love to give IM injections. Don't like to cause pain but for some reason I love doing the deep IM's. Yes I know this makes me weird!

Yup,venipuncture is for me...I love IV starts and drawing blood...I will actually look in movies or if I'm out somewhere and notice veins. I'll be like,"Damn I could start him blindfolded!":yeah:

Also love autopsies,the human body is amazing...GO Dr.Baden!:loveya:

And my weirdest usually makes people laugh...I hate false teeth! HATE THEM ! HATE THEM!:devil:

U can puke,poop,pee, or cough up a good phlegm ball on me,not a problem.

But keep your teeth to yourself!

i've always enjoyed and been proficient at iv starts on difficult to start patients and was able to do blood draws on the 400# diabetics and 80# lols. the weird was working with the most off-the-wall loonies, the huge overbearing obnoxious biker dudes who thought they could mentally or physically (almost) intimidate me, and the demented lols who still thought franklin roosevelt was president and frequently thought i was a relative. i thrived on the variety of psych... and yes they gave me a key to the locked door...:D :eek:

I really like wound care--packing, irrigating, etc..., especially if I get to see the wound heal over time. I also get a big thrill out of starting IVs. The thing that skeeves me out the most is bad teeth. We have to brush our vented patients' teeth twice per shift, and some of them appear to have never brushed their own teeth. I have brushed brown crusted teeth that were wobbling in their sockets. And you can never get some teeth really clean because you have years of tartar and plaque built up. Totally unrewarding.
