written offer letter?

I recently received a verbal offer for a position I interviewed for a few weeks ago. I have been in contact with HR since the offer and we've exchanged emails and paperwork. She emailed me a whole packet of info to fill out before we fill out pre-employment paperwork next Friday. I don't yet have an offer letter though, even though I asked her for one when she made the verbal offer (she said they need to have a start date to put on it, which has since been decided).

I do feel pretty confident that the offer is legitimate and I feel like I'm being neurotic by insisting on one.

What would you do?

You're not being neurotic at all, but if they have sent you other paperwork you're probably good to go. :)

Still good to get it all in writing -- start date, job title, assigned department, and starting rate of pay.

What you can do is send a letter to them stating that you have received the preemployment paperwork including a,b,c,d and that Jane Smith in HR informs you that your starting date for the position of XYZ will be DATE. State that you will proceed, and thank them very much for the offer of employment. Keep a copy and if you're really paranoid, send it return-receipt-requested (little green card at the post office, cost ya a coupla bucks and worth every dime).

Thank you for the advice! I felt a little crazy since I knew the offer was valid but I had nothing in writing about the salary, start date or title. I've heard so many horror stories! I emailed my HR contact and she felt bad because she didn't know I was waiting for the letter. She emailed me a PDF of an official offer letter with my orientation dates and all the details of employment. I now feel confident and ready to give my notice to my current employer!

I also have had job offers recently. Four, to be precise. None of them wanted to send a written offer letter. None of them wanted to release specific benefits info to me until I had accepted the position. All of them acted like I was weird for wanting these things. Not sure what gives, but it is STRANGE. All of them were major health corporations.

Too many posters at AN have resigned from jobs based on verbal offers, to end up unemployed because that offer never materialized or was yanked from under their feet. You were wise to follow-up on getting the offer in writing.

Even before nut singe I've always overlapped jobs. For two weeks to 4 weeks I'd work two full time jobs also gives me a quick out and a fallback if I don't like the new job!

When I got hired at my current job, they gave me the offer letter when I came in to fill out the employment paperwork.
