~Transplant Nurse~

Hello!!! This morning I had a great interview for a transplant coordinator position for small bowel and multi-visceral transplant patients. I am really excited about the position, but it will be much different from what I do now. I'm currently on a "weekend" program as a transplant floor nurse. The perks to this program are 24 hour work weeks, with the option to work a third day at the weekend rate. The downfall is that I miss out on most family gatherings, times with friends, and most holidays.
The coordinator job is M-F from 9a-5p, like most of the world! It also requires "call" approximately 8 days per month, where I would take calls from patients with problems, or to set up a transplant. Weekends are free, but you must take call once per month. This position is based out of an office, with no direct patient care. The coordinators do go to clinic twice per week, but I'm not sure as to exactly what they do.
Has anyone else experienced a similar transition- either to a coordinator position or to business hours? Has anyone gone back to shift work after not liking a "regular" schedule? I shadow a coordinator in the clinic next week, to see if it is something I would like to do. Thanks everyone

Work-Life balance is very important. If it really bothers you to miss these family & social events, you may very well like the 9-5 better.

I went from weekends to weekdays because of family... I did weekends for close to 3 years and it was starting to take a toll on my marriage. He worked M-F and I worked Sat, Sun and usually Fridays... so we rarely did anything as a family and lost connection. I could not go back. I do still do 12 shifts as an ICU nurse, but its weekdays only. No weekends. I have that time for my family and it has helped A LOT.
9-5 can get old as well... being at work 5 days a week as opposed to 2-3. That makes a difference. When I switched to weekdays, we then had to think about daycare for our young kids and the cost of that. Nothing compares to the time I have on the weekends tho with family.
I think shadowing will for sure be your best indicator if that is something you really want to do. Good luck!
