Worth it or not Smartphone

Published

This past April, I was able to upgrade my cell phone, however, I thought I would wait to see if I were to be accepted into NS or not. In the mean time, I emailed a facebook friend whom has just completed her first year of NS and asked if the school allows the use smart phones for their apps. I was told that one prof. doesn't mind them, but if another prof. so much as even sees the phone, your in trouble. This week I received my acceptance letter! :nurse: So I guess I am wondering for those of you that have them and use the apps, is it still worth me upgrading mine even though the school prohibits them? Will it help when I am studying on my own and things like that?

I use mine in pre- and post-clinicals to look things up, but god help you if you're caught using one on the floor. TBS, I use it for lots of other things, too, and it's like my external hd. It has my calendar, my phone list, my grocery list, my med lists, etc. I'd get one just because of how useful it is, and if you can use it on the floor, it's gravy. Our hospitals are all on EMRs, so it's easy to look things up right at bedside if we need to.

I love my Smartphone and would never want to go without it, but it has nothing to do with nursing. LOL I did use the the Nurse central I think it was called. Had stuff for labs, drugs, diagnosis and so on.

Specializes in Hospice & Palliative Care, Oncology, M/S.

I went the first year with a regular flip phone and the non-camera iTouch we were required to have.

Now I have a Windows Phone and it's unbelievable how it has improved my organization and ease of communication. Some clinical sites won't allow any kind of electronics, period, but I've had other instructors who have communicated with us during clinicals using text messaging.

I say go for it. :)

See I have never had a smartphone, so therefor I do not know what I am missing! :lol2: However, do you feel it's worth getting one for apps like nurse central to use in my personal time since my school seems to prohibit them?

See this is what I am trying to find out. If it's worth it or not to sign another two year contract or not. I am so tired of my huge cell phone bill and we don't even have internet access! I have no clue what it would even begin to jump up to.

expect about another 30/month/phone with smart phones with most carriers. I know that Verizon is going away from unlimited data so they might have some cheaper options for low data usage users.

I love my Droid. But I dont use it for nursing at all ha ha. I will say, Pandora on night shift is amazing when you have to slog through a lot of charting!

I used the apps outside of the hospital more then in. We could have them in the hospital if we used that part of it. But the computers and laptops in the hospital had all the drug info and it was easier to use. Just highlight and right click and up popped the drug info. I used mined for case study's, patient history drugs, googling and so on. Then I use it for Email a lot and facebook and massive pictures of my kids. LOL

So yes it was worth to have the drug apps, like I said, I had the one that had like 4 different tools in it, and for the googling concerning my school work. I am a gadget person though, when I had an excuse to get one I did and never looked back. I had a droid and love it but I am waiting for verizon to get the Iphone5 and then I am upgrading to that.

I will justify any new gadget to get ;)

Of course they are! They are the last network besides Sprint to have unlimited. They just have too many people and the data is just getting congested. Which is great since they are rolling out LTE here soon:uhoh3: ANd i havent read if they will grandfather people into unlimited like ATT did or what the plan is

Dont be surprised when it starts to happen with home internet next.

They better grandfather me in. I do not want to have to start keeping track of that crap and there are 3 of us on the unlimited data plan. If they do it on the home broadband then I am really in trouble. We have 5 laptops running on the WiFi and sometimes the Ipad and phones too. They already had limits back on Dial Up, I really hope they don't go back. I would be forced to get a life and get off the computer!

What is LTE?

This is me too and this is why I keep making different excuses of why I need one! So what is limited data plan? You only have so many uses to use it online per month? I have seen so many apps that look neat; I am kind of wish that my school made that mandatory!
