Faking a cough sounds so boring compared to these sick day excuses. Here are the 2014 roundup of the year's most unbelievable excuses bosses have heard from employees. If they're to be believed, American workers got into some serious hijinks this year.
Here are the top excuses from their representative sample of 2,203 hiring managers and HR professionals across companies:
10. Employee just put a casserole in the oven.
9. Employee's plastic surgery for enhancement purposes needed some "tweaking" to get it just right.
8. Employee was sitting in the bathroom and her feet and legs fell asleep. When she stood up, she fell and broke her ankle.
7. Employee had been at the casino all weekend and still had money left to play with on Monday morning.
6. Employee woke up in a good mood and didn't want to ruin it.
5. Employee had a "lucky night" and didn't know where he was.
4. Employee got stuck in the blood pressure machine at the grocery store and couldn't get out.
3. Employee had a gall stone they wanted to heal holistically.
2. Employee caught their uniform on fire by putting it in the microwave to dry.
1. Employee accidentally got on a plane.

I read this. I laughed so hard when I got to number one. What did the employer say? How do you "accidentally" get on a plane? Lol! Oh I accidentally got up, drove to the airport, bought a ticket, went through security, waited for the plane & then got on it? Lol!
My dumbest excuse ever was that I had thought I was off the next day (after I had worked last) and didn't have a clean uniform.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who accidentally gets on a plane.

I believe #6 is referred to as a "Mental Health Day".
Back in 1972, THREE times I woke up, jumped out of bed, and immediately fell over as my right side refused to function. I had such severe dizziness I had to crawl along the wall to the phone to call out sick. I could not stop the spinning to my right nor stand up nor crawl back to bed, so I stayed on the floor until the episode stopped, which was a very gradual process.
Naturally, nobody at worked 'believed' me.
After the 3rd time it happened I saw a doc, who found nothing wrong with me.
Years later, my mother had the same thing happen to her and had a PRN med to deal with it.

I will accept excuse #4 provided the employee provides photographic and/or video evidence of the attempts made to free them from the machine. But it's one of those excuses that you could really only use once.
Actually DID burn my uniform once---one of those disgusting polyester-foam-knits that made you sweat all shift long---by laying it across the gas hot-air heater to finish drying. It had brown and blackened-crispy-edged stripes all down the backside.

A CNA at a nursing home said she had to leave work because her house was on fire. A quick call to the fire department verified that that was a lie lol. Why would you make up something like that???

We had a CNA once make a call on her personal cell phone while in a resident's room (witnessed by another CNA) to someone telling them to call the facility.... five minutes later after answering this call she runs screaming to the front of the building that her daughter has fallen down the stairs. Not the first time she has pulled something like this, and they still let her go home.
