Worried about my chances.

Published

Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting here, I've been following a lot of the threads for a while but tonight I decided to give it a go & hopefully get some reassurance or advice.

I'll start off by saying this is my second go around with college. My first time was when I was 17, & honestly wasn't as ready as I thought I was so school took the backseat & I failed horribly.

Last fall, after 11 years I decided to go back & persue my dream of becoming an RN so I registered at our local CC & was granted academic renewal so none of my previous crappy grades would be recognized (thankfully!).

Our school requires you to take Intro to Psych, English 101, Algebra, & both A&P lecture & lab before applying for the nursing program. I started out strong & held a 4.0 both Fall & spring (I was so proud of myself). The only classes I hadn't taken yet were A&P lab & lecture because my advisor was convinced I couldn't handle that & Algebra at the same time, so I was forced to take it during the summer if I wanted a chance to apply for the nursing program this fall.

Unfortunately, I'm carrying high B's in both classes & our finals are Monday. I'm studying obsessively for both classes, but I know with an 86 in lecture the chances of me pulling it up to an A are virtually impossible.

I'm beating myself up over it because I wanted it so bad & was trying so hard to keep my 4.0 but somewhere along the way I fumbled. My school requires at least a 2.7 to apply, & with just my nursing pre reqs I'll have a 3.7.

I'm taking the TEAS in July, & just needed advice as to whether I should go ahead & apply for the nursing program if i do well on it. Or retake the classes before I even try.

Thank you for your time!

just apply to schools. The school I applied to only required GPA. No entry exam or tests

I'd apply to the nursing program anyways. Your GPA was met and you hold a very good GPA.

Well first, you need to figure out if you meet the minimum requirements. If the 2.7 GPA requirement applies to all college courses (or your science GPA, which I have seen in a very small number of programs), then I'd figure out that GPA and maybe retaking (if they accept retakes) or consider taking a few additional courses, if you have not meet the requirement. If the 2.7 GPA applies only to your prerequisites (and there are no issues with retakes), then it sounds like your doing really well. I am wondering why your advisor told you to not take algebra (I believe you will need statistics still after taking algebra) and A&P at the same time. If it was early on, in returning to school, then that's understandable. However, many schools like to see that you can manage science courses, as a full-time student.

Anyway, assuming that the minimum GPA is for prerequisite grades only and you did well on your TEAS and there were no other factors to select from (clinical hours, community service...), I would apply. But, I would really think about whether you are ready for the TEAS, if you will be just starting anatomy and physiology when you take the test. Also, before taking the TEAS, make sure you take a couple practice tests to see how you do. I would also consider applying to other programs and not "putting all my eggs in one basket", in case you are not selected for the program (and hopefully that will not be the case). It is important that you do not rush things, especially with TEAS preparation and if the school evaluates you on experiences you might not have (for example, clinical), and to look at as many programs as you can, to understand which one is right for you. Good luck!

I mean, if you meet the minimum requirements, why the heck wouldn't you apply?

I'm not aware of any nursing program that gives you a one time shot at applying...

Worst case scenario, you don't get in - and THEN you retake classes to raise your GPA. And once that's done, you reapply.

But why put the time and energy and money into retaking a class that you might not need to if you do get accepted?

I totally agree with the post just apply lol.. as mentioned by mrphil79 worst case they will tell you your GPA is low and need to reapply next semester or so. However the higher the GPA is more changes you will have to get in for sure.

Oh no I can apply more than once. Just didn't want to get my hopes up & then wait it out just to be disappointed.

Very true! I suppose i could also transfer to the BSN program at our university if I don't get accepted first go around. If not I'll have to wait another year before applying again í ½í¸”

Wait... Now I'm confused...

Isn't that how long you'd have to wait anyway if you retook the classes??

I think the 2.7 is only the nursing pre reqs together & doesn't count the other classes I've taken. My overall GPA is a 3.8 though.

As for my advisor.. Welllll she's not too good at advising lol She even looked back at the paper she had given me & was like 'I don't know why I didn't give you A&P because you need those' she also told me that I didn't need the Intro into Health Sciences class to apply for nursing but when my friend asked the head of the nursing program, she said that we did.

I'm currently in A&P lecture & lab, I took them the first summer session. I think I worded my post wrong lol my finals for both will be this Monday. I planned to take my TEAS before taking this class but in sure glad I didn't after looking into some practice tests. Lol

Thank you for your advice!

I don't understand what the issue is. Your grades are excellent. You only need a min of 2.7 to apply. Did you give us a typo? Why are you "worried" about your chances? Why wouldn't one just apply if they meet min requirements, which you will?

If you are genuinely concerned (unless this is just needing us to reaffirm how great your grades are) I would speak with an advisor, which you have and this person is clearly not concerned about you.

If you want a pat on the back, reach around and give yourself one. I find it hard to believe you genuinely think you "messed up" because your GPA is a 3.8. You do realize GPA is on a 4.0 scale, no?

I wasn't looking for a pat on the back. I was genuinely looking for information or whether or not someone had been accepted into the program with a 3.7, or if I should try again. I was told that we needed a really high GPA & to do stellar on the the TEAS to get in because they only accept 30 people.

Good God you're rude.
