Anyone who is familiar with the Killeen area or have heard of it please let me know (i'm new to Texas)!

Can anyone tell me about their experience working as a nurse in the city of Killeen?

Is it safe?

Do nurses get hired here easily unlike dallas, plano, carrollton, or fort worth?

Do people prefer not to work in Killeen due to many reasons like safety concerns?

Any general info would be greatly appreciated!

I'm curious, why would you think that Killeen is unsafe? Are you fearful of the military presence nearby? I've never come across any information that would indicate that Central Tx is a a risky area - unless you happen to be a deer.

No I don't mind the military presence. I searched and it mentioned how high the crime rate is. Also the first day I visited Killeen I parked at Starbucks and a car pulled up next to me and asked me to give him some money and that he doesn't want to make anything difficult to happen... so I fumbled to get my wallet and gave him a $20 and he parked out and drove away.

We lived in Killeen, to be more precise, Harker Heights. This was decades ago (the 70's). My husband was familiar with the area and said that it depended upon what area you chose to live in, but back then, it was known for crime. At one apartment, we were the victims of parking lot theft. At another rental, I had problems one day when a suspicious man stood outside in our yard for a long time. He looked like he was casing the neighborhood. The lady across the street had her place broken into.

Since then I have lived in other areas known for crime. If you don't have the means to live in the "nice" area of town, it doesn't matter where you live, you might encounter crime. You also might encounter crime in the nice areas too. A person just learns to be careful about personal safety, no matter where you live.

Unsure how old this post is however it really isn't as an experienced nurse. I have 4+ years experience. I applied to several positions and got calls within a few days. There is Metroplex, Baylor Scott and White, Seton Medical in Harker heights which is nearby and also cedar crest hospital( mental health/ psych) which is in Belton, 25 min away from Killeen (pay is more than $30/hour at cedar crest. They need more nurses around this area. Seems there is a shortage. It's not my 1st choice however it is a military station and reason many nurses end up here or move here and reason I'm here. Also depends on area you live in Killeen if it's unsafe. There are some good and bad areas just like any other city.
