Looking to quell some of my anxiety prior to pursuing nursing whole heartedly. What can i do for money/benefits while in nursing school? I'm married with two kiddos and i carry our health benefits (hubby is self employed). The nursing program I'm looking at is day only, but not all day every day. I would have to bring in some money and preferably also health insurance. I'm in CT and should mention I'lol be 40 next year - so of course age is on my mind as well.... thanks!

Its very common for students to work in Nursing School especially since a majority of them have families, so they've been working prior to starting a program. I currently work 40 hours a week and my hours are very flexible but I was lucky enough to find an Evening Program that accommodates working students, maybe you should try to find a third shift part time job or something. Nothing too overwhelming though as Nursing school is already difficult enough.

Most people I know worked while in nursing school. i worked full time nights and went to school full time days, had 2 kids at the time and was married. My wife worked days so we had to pay day care along with everything also. We were poor by our standards now but now are both BSNs and working on MSNs, kids are grown and we are way past 40. You got this.

I know this is an old thread but thank you for your responses! Those who worked during NS (full time/benefits) what kind of jobs did you do? Nursing assistants, other?

Many of my former classmates in nursing school that had full time jobs were CNA's for hospitals or SNFs/LTACs. Some were caregivers for agencies while I knew one family man who was a full time psych tech. I actually don't think anyone had a job outside of the medical field at that time.

Thank you. I"m in retail management right now... so I guess as I get closer and actually attending nursing school becomes a sure thing, I could take my local CNA course? I would not be able to do my current job and go to ns - that's a definite....

I'm always for nursing students and pre-nursing students getting jobs or volunteering in the medical field. Best way to get experience and the best way to get your foot in the door for your RN position in the future. It doesn't have to be full time, can always go part time or per diem.
