Working at a nursing home vs hospital in nursing school

Published

Hello everyone!

I am looking for advice on how to proceed with my career while in nursing school. I am currently an LPN applying for clinicals in RN school. I currently work 12 hr shift just weekends at the hospital. I was offered a 3-11pm shift at a nursing home. However, I dont know if the hours would be doable. I am told we would go to school on Monday and Wednesday for half day, off on Tuesday and Friday and clinicals for 12 hours on Thursday once in the program. I cant afford not to work during this time because I am a single mother of 4. Also, i must add in that the nursing home hours are guaranteed whereas the hours at the hospital are not since we be placed oncall or sent home early if the census drops. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

If it were me, I would stay right where you are during the program.

Thank you for your advice

i worked as an lpn in a nursing home on the weekends (two 12 hour shifts and some prn on the side occasionally) while I went to Rn school. that worked out ok since I dont have big bills. I dont see how anyone can pass if they work more than two days a week, but I guess some do. It cost alot of money to fail nursing school, so if you have to go into debt to get thru it, it may be worth it.
