Working on MSN: Should I accept a LTC Administrator job offer?

Dear Nurse Beth,

I have my BSN, and I have worked in long term care and acute care. I am working on my MSN with health care administration. My question is I have been offered a job to be an Administrator in a long term care facility. But I am not sure if long term care administration is a good move or would acute care be a better job opportunity for me. What is the best option for career advancement?

Dear LTC Administrator,

The job offer of LTC administrator sounds like it could be a great opportunity. You don't say what your position is in acute care, but working as an administrator in health care is perfect for your MSN track.

Are you concerned about leaving acute care and then not being able to get back in? That's understandable, but the skill sets you will acquire as an administrator are transferable to other health care care settings.

Do make sure it's a reputable facility as you weigh your options. If the facility has a poor reputation, the job will be frustrating and the role will not be as much of a resume booster.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
